INGLEWOOD.
PROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Dec. 3.—Tho town bore a deserted aspect yesterday, when the rival attractions of tho Central School Carnival and the Stratford Show, more especially the latter, occasioned a temporary reduction in the population. Tiio golf season has at length reached a reluctant close, in spito of tho efforts of some of the players to have the links kept open during the summer. Those who play otlici games, such as bowls or tennis, iiavo had tho better of the argument. Golf and bowls appear to have an easy lead in popularity over the other games played here. Cricket is apparently dead and beneath the sod, and unless the ladies take it up as a pastime, is likely to remain so, tit any rate for the duration of tho war. Yesterday five scholar-kip candidates went from the local school to. sit lor their first papers in the examination, at tho Stratford centre. In view of !ns departure, for camp with the next batch of reinforcements, Mr. Bracegirdle, of Kaimata, was. last night, tendered a farewell social by a, few of his friends. In the course of a very pleasant evening he was made tho rociniont ot a wristlet watch as a small token of the esteem of his friends. Mr. .Murdoch Maekay, who for many years has been a resident of Inglewood, lias disposed of his property, anil leaves, wilh Miss .Maekay. some timo this month to settle at Tauranga. At tho monthly meeting ot tho Borough Council on Wednesday evening, tho Baths’ Committee reported that there hurl been no suitable applications for the position of caretaker of the baths for this season, and recommended that applications be again called for and tho salary increased to £2 His per week. Tho report was adopted. The. failure to procure a caretaker has meant that the baths have not yet been opened. However, as favourable weather conditions for bathing have only just become operative, tho council has been saved the expense of an (until the present lime) unnecessary salary. U is rumoured that a new firm of auctioneers is to commence business in Inglewood shortly. A well-known Inglewood business man alleges that he has, per medium of the National Registration Form, intimated his willingness to servo the country either in the capacity of a paymaster or as an official of the canteen. He has not yet been notified that his offer is accepted.
