BOXING TOURNAMENT.

'AT HIGH SCHOOL'. The annual boxing tournament in connection with tho Boys’ High School was held in tho gymnasium on Friday, before a small" attendance of old boys and parents. The small attendance was accounted for by the fact that it was only knoivn to a few outside tho school that the tournament was to take place on that night. Mr. W. Hutchings acted as referee and Mr. H. V. Scarlo was timekeeper. Sonic very good bouts wore witnessed, especially between tho smaller hoys, who stood up to one another in great style. However, not a few knew something about the art of boxing, and a fair amount of science was mingled with the hard hitting. Amor i., who carried off tho under fist, championship, displayed considerable skill, and in a few years should develop into a good boxer. Jackson was also good. In the senior championship some good bouts were witnessed. The, following is an account of the different bouts;— Under Bst.—Callander v. Bayly. This was a fairly oven go, but Callander had slightly the better of the first and third rounds. Bayly recovered considerably in the second round, but Callander always held the upper hand and was declared tho winner by two points.

Under 7si.—Harrison r. Pott. Pott, who showed good science, was too good for his man, except in the second round, when Harrison livened up matters. Pott got in several blows to tho face and was using his right to advantage. He won by four points. Under sst.—Jackson v. Robinson. Jackson was too long in tho reach and Ud throughout. However, Robinson stuck to it, but Jackson was far too good and won by four points. Under 7st.— Snowden v. Duckworth. In the first round both mixed it well, but Duckworth had a slight advantage. Continuing, Duckworth got in some pood head and body blows, and Snowdon retaliated with some to the body. In the third round Duckworth did must or tho leading and completely outclassed his man, winning by six points. Under fist.—Amor i. v. Hutchcn. This was a great go, and tho points wore even at the end of the first round. In the second round Ihuchen scored to tlie head and body, but Amor made up tho lost points with some good blows and the’points were still oven. In the third round they wont for each other in great style, but Amor know a little too much and was declared tho winner by one point. This was a very popular win. Under Bst. ffinal). —Howell v. callander. Howell bad the advantage in reach and weight, and Callander misted several opportunities of scoring. Callander was guarding well, i.ut Howell broke through his defence and scored to the head. Callander livened up in the third round, hut had left it too lato and lost the verdict by one point. Under 7st.—Calder v. Pott. Calder had the longer reach and got in some good hits, but Pott always replied. In tho second round Pott frequently scored. Calder got in some nice hits in tho third round, but Pott outboxod him and won by two points. Under Gst.—Botbatnley v. Lovell. Tliis was ono of the best bouts of tho evening and an extra round had to ho boxed. They went at each other in great style, Lovell guarding _ well. In tho final round, Lovell had slightly the hotter of it and won by ono point. Junior Championship (final).—Atkinson v. M'Murray. M'Murray constantly had his man on the ropes. Atkinson had tho superior guard, but it was constantly beaten down. Atkinson was frequently driven into tho corners. It was confidently thought that M'Murray would pain the verdict, but Atkinson was declared the winner by one. point.

Senior Championship.—Wyborn v. Herbert. At the end of the first round Wyhorn led by two points. However. Herbert owned matters in scroll' 1 nnd was having the better o■ the third when Wyborn got in a lucky knock-out blow on‘the. jaw. Under 7st. (final).—Duckworth v. Pott. This bout did not eventuate, as Pott sprained his thumb when boxing with Calder. Duckworth agreed to postpone it until next work. Monteath boxed a bye with Meuh. Under 9st. (final).—Oliver v. Luccna. Oliver at once went for his man. Ho bad much the shorter reach, but frequently scored. They kept up the pressure during the second round and well on into the third, when Oliver tired. However, ho still seemed to have liticeun under control, but Uto latter gained tho verdict by one point, Tho referee thought Oliver was bitting too low. This was not intentional, but is explained bv tho fact that l.uceua is considerably the taller of the two, and Oliver had to be content with body blows. Under sst. (final).—Johns u. v. Jackson. Jackson was much too good, although Johns put up a plucky fight. Jackson won by 5 points. Under Cst. (final). —Amor v. Lovell. This was a good go. but Amor had tho better of the second round, when he led bv four points. In tho third round Lovell picked up a little, but Amor won by three points. Senior Championship (final).—Monteai.li v. Wvboru. Monteath did most of tho leading and got in several blows to tho face. In the second round Montcatb rattled his adversary by a blow on tho kidneys, but sportingly refrained from pressing matters. At the end o[„ tile second round Wyborn went down to another blow on the kidneys, and it was only the gong which prevented him from taking tho count. The third round was very lively. Wyborn got in some good blows to the face, but Monteath retaliated and chased his man round the ring. Monteath did the majority of the leading, but Wyborn gained the verdict bv one point, the referee stating that ’ho had to take off points for the kidney punches. The funny thing about it was that Wyborn would have been counted out had it not been tho end of the round, although be went down to a kidney punch. At the conclusion of tho tournament, Mr Aleves announced tho different winners of the championships. They were as follows; —_ Senior.-—Wyborn. •Tmiior.- —Atkinson. Under !)st.—Lucena.
