METHODIST SYNOD.

TARANAKI-WANGANUI DISTRICT. RECEPTION OF CHURCH DEPUTATION. . At the meeting of the Methodist Synod on Tuesday the Revs. C. H. Grant Cowcn, B.A. (Anglican), and J. K. Shore, M.A. (Presbyterian), paid a visit to the snod, and after being hearth welcomed by the chairman, offered their congratulations and fraternal greetings to the members of the synod in extending a welcome to them to Hawera. Each referred to the happy relations existing between the sister churches of Hawera, and hoped that the present crisis would be tne means of drawing the various sections nearer to one another as "brothers” serving the one Master. The chairman (Rev, T. 6. Hammond) and the Rev. A. B. Chappell responded to the welcome from the leaders of the sister churches and expressed the pleasure of the members of the synod to exchange greetings. SOCIAL SERVICE UNION. Before the ordinary meeting of the synod on Thursday, a very, profitable hour was spent by' the members of the Methodist Social Service Union. The public also wore present. The Rev. A. B. Chappell occupied the chair. The Rev. F. Lands opened a discussion on the subject. :; Ciiristianity and Our Wages System,” aid referred generally to Mr. S'. E. Keeble’s pamphlet on the above subject. After a general discussion, the Revs. J. Nivon, E. 0. Biamires, A. B. Chappell and others taking parr, the members were urged to keep closely in touch with the social questions, ana deal firmly-with, them' from the pulpit. The Rev. A. B. Chappell received the hearty congratulations of the synod, upon the acquiring of the title of a Fellow of . the Royal Economic Society, an honour both to the individual and the church. MAORI MISSION WORK. . The Rev. T. G. Hammond (superin , tondent of the West’Coast Maori Mis sion) reported fully on the Native work, during the year, emphasising the difficulties met with, particularly the. ‘•faith healing” menace; the prevalence of sickness . among the Natives—typhoid. The Land Board troubles had exceedingly unsettled the Natives this year. Special reference was to the faithful labours of all the Native'ministers, also Sister Nellie. The-report presented by Sister Nellie, dealing with the work among the Na tive girls and children, was received, j Tito Rev. Robt. Hadden dealt with the work from the Natives’ aspect, ! special reference being made to", the j Natives’ loyalty. Although weak in ; some respects they are loyal as British ’ subjects, as shown by the eagerness of i the young men to stand slue by side with their pakolra. brothers in this time of national crisis—to their' God and religion. The Rev. Air. Haddon roused the synod by his stirring address, and received the hearty- - applause of brethren. It was resolved, “That, having heard the reports of the superintendent of the West Coast Maori Mission (Rev. T. G. Hammond), also the Rev. R. Haddon and Sister Nellie, the synod expresses its unbounded sympathy with them in the difficulties of their work, as well as its deep joy in the achievements that can lie 'chronicled, and urge the conference to give its most earnest heed to the needs and claims of the Native department of our church enterprise in New Zealand.” The synod sent a word of sympathy to the people of the late Raninati Pomakariri. j COMMITTEES. The following committees were set up:— Home Mission District Advisory Committee.—The Ministers in full connection belonging to the Taranaki Ministerial Council, together with Messrs. R. Popporall, G. H. White, T. P. Hughson, E. Dixon, E. 0. drivers, F. J. Denton. ' West Coast Maori Mission Advisory * Committee.—The Revs. T. G. Hammond, A. B. Chappell, E. 0.; Bin mi res, and Maori ministers, with Messrs. E. Dixon, T. P. Hughson, and J. Masters. Connexional Paper.—Report received and congratulations extended to -.the management, editor, and committee. The next synod will be held at Way nganui. the dates to be arranged by the chairman. The Rev. O. A. Zims.’at his own request, be transferred to the Non’ South Wales Conference, was recommended. I BEWARE OF A COLD. j Beware of a coni.
