AM INTERESTING FORECAST
THE WAR PROPHESIED. A forecast of events in Europe which was published in Every Saturday on January 8. UllO, is particularly interesting just now by reason of the fact that the present year was fixed as the period in which there would be a ''conflict of giants” ns a result or the Kaiser’s ambition to become the master of Europe. “Germany,” read the article referred to : “is determined not to relax for n single instant her policy c'f naval expansion. She has just made a semi-official statement to this effect, In reply to a rumoured intention of an opposite character which had been circulated in Berlin by a publicist. It is the ambition of the Kaiser to become virtually master of Europe, as controller of the greatest army ot modern times, because the power of Russia has bncu broken by the events of the Busso-Japanoso war, and France is uot strong enough to cope single-handed with Germany. When his naval programme is completed William 11. hopes to Income an equally dominant power on the high seas, and so to fulfil one of the dreams of Napoleon Bonaparte, Groat Britain only standing in the way, ns she did in that of the French Emperor, so that the year 1915 is likely to become as eventful as that of 1815. It will be a conflict of giants, for which Germany will be held solely responsible. All the’wishes and interests of Great Britain are pacific, hut she will not shrink from the contest which is being forced upon hor, feeling that her national existence is at stake, and that the high and heroic qualities of the race which has planted its flag in every sea and established its dominions in every quarter of the globe, will be found competent to preserve tho integrity of its world-wiclo Empire, and to uphold tho power and dignity of its high historic name.”
