EL THAM.
-- . 1 PROM OCTR OW>‘ CORRESPONDENT. December I.—The Borough Council has appointed Mr. George Culling to the position of Foreman of Works, a vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. J.' A. Hansen. Mr. Culling has been for many years in the service of the council, and his promotion is considered a justly merited one. There has been a small boom in the sale of properties and businesses around and in Jiitham. Mr. F. Vincent has tab™ over the jewellery establishment of Mr. C. Ridd'. The grocery business carried on by Mr. L. T. C'resswell has been taken over by Mr. Smalley, who was formerly a branch manager (or the Hawkes Bay Farmers’ Co-op. Association. Several farm properties in the neighbourhood of Eltham have also changed hands. i Councillors Araoore and Tristram have resigned from the Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr. Dive), has been prevailed upon to reconsider his decision to resign his office and it is pleasing to record that lie has decided to carry out his mayoral duties for the balance of the year. The funds of the Ladies’ Sewing Guild, which is providing clothing for our wounded soldiers in the hospitals, are invariably at a low- ebb. To help this worthy cause a garden party will be held iii Mr. Crump’s grounds on December ,9. Mrs. Crump and the members of the Sowing Guild are throwing all their energy into the business of making the party successful, and “mine hostess” is, at her own personal cost, securing the services of the local baud for the occasion. _ The Anglican Bishop of "Wellington' is on a visit to Eltham at present.
