TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

MR. H. COCKER’S SHOP. The tailoring establishment in Devon Street so well conducted by Mr. H. Cocker has recently had extensive improvements made to enable the firm to make the premises an up-to-date city business. The improvements effected include increased space on the main floor, particularly in the fitting-on room. This has been made very cosy, having been freshly painted and papered. Two largo mirrors afford the customer every opportunity of seeing himself (or herself) at every angle. A spiral staircase (hy the way tho first introduced to any shop in New Plymouth) is a big improvement on the old method of stairway. On the second floor is tho office and second fitting-on room. There is plenty of light, and from the office an excellent view is obtained of the front and rear portion of the shop. The third floor is reserved for the employees, and here again the lighting seems excellent. Another room showed tho firm’s cutter busy at work. These alterations considerably improve the interior of the building and allow much more scope for increased trade. The conveniences of the workers are carefully studied in every possible manner. ,In addition to holding one of the largest stocks of suitings and cloths for ladies’ costumes there is an ex-oellent range of indigo blue available for selection. These are old dyes and naturally reliable. Prior to the European war the dye trade was principally German, and recognising this, Mr. Cocker bought largely of existing stocks. Excellent workmanship is a feature of Mr. Cocker’s suits and costumes (the firm only employ expert men as coat hands). Ho states that trade continues good, despite the number of young men who have gone to tho front from this district. Orders for holiday and summer suitings are coming in freely.
