The very showery weather experienced has, however, prevented tarring ond sanding being proceeded with. Forebay.—At tho forehay the work of building a buttress was completed some two weeks ago, and wo are now engaged upon tho work rendered necessary to find the source of the leakage which has given so much trouble in the past; one serious leak has been discovered in the forebay itself, but there is other leakage, which we believe is coming from the tunnel. At tho present stage lam not able to say what tho cost will bo to remedy these.

Dam at Intake. —At tho recently con : strutted dam on tho Mangamahoi Stream there is a very considerable leakage under same, and this also will have to be remedied, or it w r ill probably load to serious results if allowed to continue. i should like tho forebay and dam to be viewed as they now are, when it will be at once seen that matters are not very satisfactory. Old Waterworks Reserve.—The Old Waterworks Reserve on tho Mangorei Road has been ploughed up and laid down in oats for the use of the council’s horses; Hi acres have been sown at a cost of £36 8s for tho labour, manure and seed.

Permits. —The number of building permits applied for during the past month was eight, representing a value of £1528. Stock Route, —A matter that will probably require consideration in the near future will be the matter of providing a stock route through the borough for stock proceeding to the new freezing works at Waiwakaiho, from tho district lying to tho south. Regulations will also require to bo framed specially for conducting this traffic. Baths.—The attendance for the past month is ns follows —Men 521, ladies 183, making a total of 1004. Receipts for hot water baths, £3 ss; receipts for swimming pool, £l3 16s 6d; fee for squad of school children, £1 ss; total, £lB 6s sd. General. —The general maintenance work of tho borough is being attended to, and a yardman nas been installed at the borough yards, where an efficient system regarding tho protection and care of all the council’s property, plant and tools is being instituted. During the past fortnight the following work has been done on the tram route:—(l) From Henui Bridge to Nob’s Line: Length, 7 chains x 28 feet wide, metalled; length, 8 chains x 17 feet wide, metalled, (2) Liardet to Robe Street; Length. 18 chains x 13 feet wide, excavated and motallod; length, 10 chains x 13 feet wide, pitched and metalled. (3) Henui Bridge to Hobson Street: Both sides of tram line graded off. (4) Breakwater Road : Ton chains in length and 11 foot wide excavated ready for pitching; 25 chains pitched 11 feet wide, three chains metalled. (5) A substantial start has been made on the work of widening tho road, where required, between tbo Moturoa Hotel and the terminus. On account of the showery state of tho weather during tho past fortnight, tarring and sanding has not been attempted.

GENERAL. It was decided to defor consideration of tho engineer’s report with reference to the purchase of a scarifier, and the engineer was instructed to make inquiries as to whether a scarifier could bo obtained in Australia. Consideration of a letter from the Ngamotu Beautifying and Improvement Society with reference to water supply to whares was deferred, and the society was requested to submit tbo application again in March next, when the next year’s estimates are being framed. The borough engineer was authorised to kerb the footpath on the south side of the Breakwater Bead from Ngamotu Road to Bayly Road, at an estimated cost of £75. . , Tho bad state of the road on the town side of tho Waiwakaiho Bridge was mentioned by Councillor Sykes.
