WAITARA.

NORTH TARANAKI PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The weekly meetings of this league are quite a feature of interest each week, and at Monday's meeting a lot of work was got through without a hitch. Mr. Were, the secretary, was unavoidably absent, but bis place was taken by Mr. Hallam, who was welcomed as assistant secretary. The Mayor stated that, accompanied by Mr. Were, he had attended the meeting at Stratford of representatives of Taranaki patriotic committees, and that they had arranged that Taranaki should be a branch of the provincial or national association, whichever is eventually decided on, for the relief of the wounded soldiers and their dependents. A resolution was passed instructing the secretary to write to Mrs. Nathan, Miss Renee Maude, and Miss Hirst, of New Plymouth, thanking them for their valuable services to the league in giving the recital last week. Mr. Smith reported that at the annual meeting of the Waitara Road Dairy Factory it was decided to continue to devote per pound of the output of butter-fat to the Wounded Soldiers Fund, and added that if a lump sum was required to deal with eases of returning soldiers, arrangements could be made to advance, say, a hundred pounds, to meet any emergency that might arise. The announcement was received with applause. It was decided that a gift social should be arranged for Christmas gifts to bur boys at the Dardanelles, An attempt had been made to obtain the names of all who have left this district, hnt the list so far has not been completed, and it may possibly he necessary to apply to Wellington. Df. Campbell, however, thought he could help in this direction by supplying the names of all that he had passed as medically fit. » It was stated that Mr. Barnett, of Uruti. had suggested that official re-ceipt-books should be supplied to local committees. Uruti district, for instance, was being divided up into five separate blocks, and each of . these blocks would have a representative of the local committee, who would be responsible for his particular block. Each of these representatives would be provided with an official receipt-book, m which would be recorded all donations received by him in his district, and the butts would be a record of what the separate districts had done towards helping those who are fighting for us. The suggestion was considered a good one, anoTt was decided to have tho books printed for the various local committees of the North Taranaki League. Mr. Rennie spoke in regard to the sixpence-a-week fund, stating that a good many people who could well afford the small sum were giving Up their weekly contributions. He believed that if the amounts contributed, by each person were printed each quarter it would have a good effect. He also referred to the question of “sending off” hoys. The first hatch was given a social under the auspices of the committee. Since then, however, nothing more had been done by them, and it had been left to outsiders to give socials, as might happen, some men being “sent off” in style, while for others nothing at all was done. He considered the committee had made a mistake. but that was no reason why they should continue to do so, and stated that when the next lot of men went away he should move that the committee take steps to see that they were properly “sent off.” Mr. F. Y. Andrews reported that the profits arising from the season’s euchre parties at Huiraugi were to he handed over to the Belgian Fund. The members of the executive standing, a vote of condolence with Mr. and Mrs. Grimmer in the loss their son was passed.
