CORRESPONDENCE.

We are not responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents. The writer’s name, as a guarantee of good faith, must be enclosed in the letter. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION. TO THE -EniTOR. Sir,— Kindly permit me through the medium of your paper to appeal to past St. John Ambulance members to lend their “Home Nursing” boohs to the present class just starting, as I find there are none procurable in the Dominion (no doubt due to the increased activity of St. John classes during the war). If they will bo good enough to do so and leave them at my house, Eliot Street, or at Mr. E. DockrilTs shop, Devon Street, and write their name inside 1 will return them as soon as the class is over.—l am, etc., MRS. DOOKRILL, Hon. Secretary New Plymouth Centre. MUDDLING AND MUD. TO THE EDITOR, Sir, —I quite , sympathise with Mr. Crawford’s letter as to the hardships unjustly inflicted on him and on all other users of vehicles who have to travel on the Devon Road East. For about two months the borough has been occupied taking a slight strip off the crown of the rise near Paynter’s Lane—a job that a good contractor would have put through in two weeks. The muddle and go-as-you-please style that has characterised this work have been the subject of the jibes of the wayfarer and the curses of the carrier and motorist. For weeks the traffic has been diverted through “Chilman’s” and Paynter’s Lane. So bad has this route become that people are constantly being bogged. Last night, for instance, a resident in Paynter’s Lane was roused up three times by different people whoso vehicles he had to help to pull out of holes. Cannot our councillors pull themselvs together and do something? For goodness’ sake let us free ourselves of muddle and waste and profit by the example of energy and system shown by the tramway contractors.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
