MOTOR SERVICE CORPS.

FOR NEW ZEALAND ARMY. MOTOR-CAR AND BOAT SECTIONS. New regulations have been drawn up and approved by the Defence authorities providing for the establishment of a Motor Service Corps in New Zealand. The corps will be known officially as the “New Zealand Forces Motor Service Corps.’ 1 and will consist of two sections: (a) The Motor-car Section, and (b) the Motor-boat Section. ESTABLISHMENT. The establishment will be as under;— One Lieut.-Colonel in command, with one staff officer (Captain). Motor-car Motor-boat , Section. Section. Majors 16 5 Captains 32 11 Subalterns 12S 44 Each district ‘will appeint one District Senior Officer in the Motor-car Section and one in the Motor-boat section. The - District Senior Officers will have jurisdiction over their respective sections of the corps, and will be responsible to the Commanding Officer for the proper training and efficiency of their commands., ADMINISTRATION. The New Zealand Forces Motor Service Corps will be administered on mobilisation by a lientenaut-colonel of tho Territorial Force, who will bo responsible to the Quartermaster-General, assisted by a stab officer, who will be apoiuted from tho Permanent Forces of the Dominion. The administrative duties in peace will be performed, as regards requisitions for service and payment, by an officer of the headquarters staff under the Quartermaster-General. REQUISITIONS FOR SERVICE. In peace time, requisitions’ for the .services of the New Zealand Forces Motor Service Corps will be served on the district senior officer, or the officer acting for him, by an officer of the headquarters or district headquarters .staff duly appointed for the purpose. Officers will bo called up for duty, as far as possible, in rotation, aud in tho district in which 'they reside. APPOINTMENTS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. Applicants for commissions in tho New Zealand Forces Motor Service Corps must possess a thoroughly .effi-cient’motor-ehr'or'a seaworthy motorboat, suitable for coast defence service, and will, prior to appointment, he required to pass a few simple tests relating to elementary motor mechanics. First appointments will be on probation. Within twelve months frAm the date of thmr appointment as second lieutenants, (oir probation) officers will be required to pass an examination, and on passing will bo promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Before promotion to the rank of captain, officers must pass in a higher grade! Promotion to higher rank than that of captain will be by seniority as vacancies occur, subjejet to the recommendation of the district senior officers through the officer commanding ‘ the corps. In special cases promotion may be made by headquarters, on tho recommendation of the officer commanding the corps, to higher rank without examination! Officers will be required to perform ten days’ duty annually, consecutively or otherwise as required, or twenty halfdays, if called upon. AH ranks will be required to attend at least six drill parades per annum for the purpose of receiving instruction in suitable subjects. Such parades will not count as ‘ tours, of duty” for which pay and allowances arc granted. The duties of the corps will bo entirely in connection with the Headquarters," District, and Coast Defence Staffs of tho Defence Forces. Compulsory members of the Territorial Force are not eligible for appointment to the corps. PAY AND ALLOWANCE FOR CARS. Except in the case of mobilisation of the forces, officers will only be called generally within a forty-mile radius of the place of assembly for manoeuvres, etc. When called out for duty officers will receive pay and allowance as laid down - in “Financial Instructions and Allowance Regulations.” Half rates only will be paid for half-day tours. Motor-car Section. —In cases where the tour of duty is over very rough and hilly country, and much stopping and restarting is necessary, district senior officers may authorise the payment of Allowance at rate and a half. This allowance must cover all expenses, including wear and tear, cost of petrol and lubricating oil, cost of repairs. Officers of the New Zealand Forces Motor Service Corps will take precedence as follows:—(1) For tho purpose of command, with their own unit only; (2) for purposes other than command, according to the date of their seniority in the Territorial Force.
