LIQUOR FOR SOLDIERS PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON. July 5. In the Magistrate’s Court Patrick Twomey was fined £lO with coats, in default one month’s imprisonment, for purchasing liquor for two soldiers for consumption olf tho premises. OMATA. FROII OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT. July 3. —On Tuesday last, June 29, a most enjoyable and successful social in aid of the Wounded Fund was held in the Omata Hall, as the result of which considerably over £5 will bo handed over to that very worthy cause. The function was inaugurated and carried ,to a successful issue by the following young men of the district, Messrs. A. Bayly. K. Bayly, W. M'Koc. R. Mace, VY. G. Anstis, F. Anstis and F, Hutchens, and the result of their labours show's that they left no details unattended to which would in any way conduce to the enjoyment of those present. §l’hey. carried through all arrangements and the necessary work without outside help, excepting that willingly' given by Mr. C. Moore as doorkeeper. ■ The weather, which had been quite beyond description for a considerable time, favoured the occasion, and in consequence not only was there a large attendance of local people, but the brake which ran from town was loaded to overflowing, many having to be turned away—these certainly missed a treat. Mr. A. Bayly made an attentive and energetic M.C., keeping the ball of jollity rolling merrily until well into the morning hours, and even then all were loth to depart, but as such things must be, tho only consolation is to look forward to the next and then receive another instalment of enjoyment, for, with the good floor, good music, good supper, and last, but not least, good partners (for which Omata is famous), such is fully assured. During the evening tho following ladies and gentlemen added to the pleasure of those present by contributing items: Miss Wells, song (receiving an unanswered encore); Miss Blewmau, song; Miss C. Mace, song; Mr: F. Hutchens, song; Air. Meyenberg, song; and Mr. Heron a recitation, for which he received a vociferous encore. The music, being supplied by Mr. Barnitt, assisted by Mr. R. Murphy (violin), was of the best; extras were played by Mrs. Hooker and Miss Adlam. It is quite probable that another similar function will be held at no very distant date, and I should advise all those who were absent from tho last to come along and add their small donations to such a deserving cause; in fact, X consider it the duty of everyone to make an effort to ha present, when, I feel convinced, they would spend a pleasant time and forget, for a while at least, tho worries of life. It is to be hoped that the farmers, 'both old and young —by young I mean the young men who help to work the farms, for it is these that we should strive to educate—will turn out in force to hear Air. Sergei’s lecture on manures and fertilisers at tho Omata Hall on Tuesday night. Surely we can all learn something to increase the return or out down tho expense of our present farming methods.
