During the unveiling ceremony at Waitara on Thursday Mr. IV. T, Jennings handed to tho .Mayor of M’altara some vary interesting records of the early days in Taranaki. Tho Mayor, Mr. Beckbessingcr, returned thanks to Mr. Jennings for his generous gift, \vhipli he said would ho housed in tho I’nblic Library. Thursday was the fiftieth anniversary of the Brougham Street Hail, which was tile first Masonic building in New Plymouth. It was opened by the Do Burgh Adams Lodgo when that lodge was established in 18Go, and on Thursday, when the installation took place of Bro. John Toms as Worshipful Master, tho installation banquet was held in tho Brougham Street Hall.

In connection with tho exhibition in Miss Hamcrton’s Art Depot, Devon Street, of etchings and paintings in oils and water colours, by the well-known New Zealand artist, Mr. A. F. Nicoll, a further seven pictures have arrived, and are now on view. One of these, entitled ‘‘Midlothian Canal,” is the oil which was hung on tho lino at the Royal Academy in 1913, and it is a very fine piece of work. All tho other etchings and paintings are well worth inspection, whilst those people wanting first-class pictures for their homes have at present an unique opportunity of securing them.

At Auckland, on Friday last, the Fed -Dandies, with their manager, in spite of rain and wind, paraded Queen Street and soon collected £oo as the outcome of telling speeches and n hr cony entertainment. Altogether Mr. Scott Colville and his talented company raised £213 ter the Hospital Ship -Fund. This prompted us to suggest to Mr. \V. A. Low. the advance manager, a street entertainment in New Plymouth. Mr. Low at once took the matter up enthusiastically, and obtained the necessary permission from Mr. Colville. Particulars of the programme will bo given later.

Members of the Taranaki Agricultural Society arc reminded of the meeting to be hold at two o’clock to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon, at the Town Hall, to consider the abandonment of tho Autumn Show*. Intending members are also invited, to be present. The question is of great importance, and it is hoped that there will bo a good attendance of farmers, for whose convenience the mooting is being held in tho afternoon. We have already dealt with the‘matter at some length* and as there is grout pressure on our space to-day it must suffice to say that tho executive of tho society are not inclined to undertake- the heavy work and responsibility of organising a show next autumn unless the fanners evince a more lively interest and give a moro generous support. It is said that the Taranaki man never goes out without mi oilskin, the inference being, of course, that it is always raining. The obelisk unveiled at AVaitara on Thursday is of polished black granite, about 14ft. in height, the base being lift. bin. across, and was supplied by Mr. AV. F. Short, .Now Plymouth. The AArellington Harbour Board on Monday night resolved to make inquiries concerning the cost of constructing a Hunting dock to take vessels up to 1000 tens dead weight, the dock to bo placed in Lambkin Harbour. During the past ton'days enormous quantities of alcoholic liquor and tobacco have been removed from bond in Auckland in order to escape possible increases of duty under the new Budget.
