Although the Panama Canal is still far from paying expenses of operation, to say nothing of interest on the capita] cost, eacli month’s report shows an increase in the volume of travel through the waterway (writes Tho Post’s San Francisco correspondent). When tlm dislocation of ocean commerce due to the war shall have become a thing of the past, normal shipments by way of the canal will, in the opinion of" experts, ho throe or four times what they are now. Recently a new departure in canal traffic was inaugurated, when San Francisco welcomed a large passenger liner from New York’, tho first to make the trip. Tho Finland brought 451) passengers through the Panama Canal. She is tho forerunner of u regular passenger service between the Atlantic and Pacific Coast, via Panama. The I inland and Kroonlaud will bo the first two vessels to test the possibilities in this_ line. Both were formerly transatlantic liners, crossing rcgularly to Europe. The passengers on the Finland state that tho trip from New York to San Francisco, which occupied 17J days, was one of continuous pleasure, very little rough weather being encountered. Few sailers -now under the .British flag are hotter known than the fourmasted barque Holt Hill and the barque Invernuiy, consequently much interest is certain to ho shown in the trial of speed they are now engaged upon. Laden with ease oil, the fourmaster S hound to Melbourne, whilst the Invermay, with a full cargo of general merchandise, is hound to Sydney. Cables received at Sydney on June 15 announce that they have noth left Now York, and as they undoubtedly are in good trim and condition, some smart sailing is sure to be reported on arrival. Recent advices received from New Y'ork state that sailing tonnage for Australia still continues to advance, and that the latest fixtures have boon made at a big increase compared with the prices paid for vessels fixed some months ago. Tbe following are tho ia.U'st charters:—The British barque Galgorm Castle. 1507 tons register, taken at 47s per ton, Jime-July, loading; tile ship Kirkcudbrightshire, 1482 tons, fixed at 5U per ton, one port, if two ports 555. ,/unc-Jiily loading; tbe four-masted barque Vimoirn, 2163 tons, was also fixed to load for Melbourne and Sydney at 55s per ton. As the. barque Manunui was being towoVl from Auckland n few days ago the vessel by some moans got out of control, and, slewing round, ran on to the mud oil’ Craig’s Wharf. Tho Manunui is fully loaded with sawn Umber. for Sydney, and, as the tide was on the ebb, all efforts to tow the vessel off failed. She remained hard and fast by tbe bow until 8 o’clock in the evening, when she wak floated off the shoal and lowed out to sea.
