FOUR MILLION MEN ATTACKING RUSSIA.

FRENCH SUCCESS IN THE DARDANELLES

FURTHER ACCOUNT OF OUR MEN’S

FIGHTING.

The reports, from the Dardanelles to-day describe a successful advance,on the left-wing by the French troops, who captured 600 yards of-Turkish trenches and some strong positions. These troops must hold the part of the line nearest to our men. Mr. Ash-mead-Bartlott gives us to-day a clear account of the attack on the 'Australian and New Zealand troops on May .IS. This was described less well by a Reuter correspondent in Wednesday's [Herald, Our men are dug in half across the peninsula at its narrowest point, and thus threaten the flank of any force attacking “the British and French nearer the end of the peninsula. General yon Sanders therefore determined to push our men into the sea, but found the task impossible. The fall of Lemberg is officially reported from Vienna, and this can cause no surprise if the semiofficial figures from Petrograd as to the numbers of the Austro.German forces are anywhere near the mark. Four million men on [the eastern front, with half that number on the hundred-mile line fcear Lemberg, can give a very powerful thrust, and the Russians iare slowly retreating. They claim to have thrown back the force on iheir left across the Dniester in some places. The Russians now have an enormous salient west of Warsaw, which will have to jsustain great pressure, though we must hope that Warsaw will psxot have to be abandoned. The Allies on the west are likely to increased activity to relieve the situation in Russia.
