LIGHT WEIGHT.
SOME WELLINGTON COMPLAINTS. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Juno 22, Afc-iixtcrvals citizens have complained that, they Ira.vo paid at the rate of Is 7d a pound for short-weight butter. The Health Department has been on tho aksrfc for the ’ detection of such alleged practices, and tho result of the vigilance isa that certain prosecutions may follow. The department ha,s met with a difficulty. Tire Jaw provides for action if the . quantity as sold is below ihe weightispccified on the wrapper, but if no weight is indicated the department is apparently put out of court. Certain packers of butter quickly saw the advantage of omitting the. weight on the'wrapper of alleged pound pats of butter. Experience has proved that tho JXw wffl need amendment. A single clause will be sufficient enable the dopaitment to secure a fair*dcal for the public—weight according to specification. »
Protests arc also being made against “light weight” in commodities- outside tho Health Department’s scope. A suburban resident states that alleged hundredweights are sometimes lOlb. or 121 h. short. It is not easy for tho average householder to obtain conpineing proof of such exploitation.
