RUSSIAN RETREAT CONTINUED
LEMBERG PROBABLY TO BE ABANDONED.
Briiisii Offensive In Northern
France.
ATTACK ON QUINN’S POST DESCRIBED.
The German attack in Galicia is Lein" pressed forward with all vigour in the attempt to crush the Russians so as to he able to devote more men to -the western front. Tho Russians appear certain to lose Lemberg, and they will have to retreat into Russian Poland, where the lack of railways and roads may check the Aus-tro-German advance. The Russian line will he shortened by the retreat from Galicia and, if the German'forces are in any way weakened to pursue the offensive in the west, the Russians will again advance. Meantime in the west the Allies are not likely to fail to seize the opportunity given by any reduction in the forces opposed to them. Germany has the task of keeping a superiority of men and guns on both fronts. After the losses she has already sustained this will not be easy, and the next three months should show if there is any weaknes in her armour. Mr. Rudyard Kipling explains, in a way no one can misunderstand, what Germany’s success would mean. In northern France both Britsih and French are active, and the Germans will find it difficult to resist the steady pressure they are exerting. In the Dardanelles tho position is unchanged. The strong position at Achi Baba is still untaken, and the Australians and New Zealanders have had a hard task to hold their own, as is shown by the .vivid description published to-day of the attack by the Turks on our lines. \
