HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING* The regular meeting of the Board of Governors of tho Now Plymouth High Schools was held on Monday night, and was attended by Messrs. E. Dixie rill (chairman), A- M’Hardy. IV. N. Ewing, M. Fraser, and £. P. Webster. THE BOYS’ SCHOOL. The principal of the Boys’ School, Mi'. W. H. Moyes. reported that the school re-opened after tho holidays on Tuesday, May 25. Eleven ucw boys had entered, while seven had left. The roll now stood at 201, and comprised 61 boardeix and 110 day boys. Prospectus.—The publication of a new prospectus was now a matter of necessity. No copies of the old one were left, and be bad been unable to forward copies to many who had written for, them. He would therefore ask for permission to prepare a prospectus with a view to having it printed at the end of tho present term. —The necessary permission was granted. THE GIRLS’ SCHOOL. Miss Flora J. W. Hodges, principal of tho Girls' School, reported that the school ro-openod for the second terra’s work on Tuesday, June 1. In the senior department two new pupils were enrolled, and in the junior department four, making the total in the former department 67, and in tho latter 11. Of the senior pupils 11 were paying tuition fees. One of the free, place pupils who was absent through illhealth tho greater part of last term was still away for the same cause, and was not likely to return to school this term.

On Wednesday, Juno 9, the school was visited by the Right Hon. W. F. Massey, tho Premier, who gave the girls a short address on the part played by women in tho present war. The question of a school piano was a pressing one, and ought to be decided at once. A piano was used so much in a girls’ school for singing, drill and dancing that it might he considered a necessary part of tbo school equipment. She hoped tbo board would see its way to supply this want as soon as possible. At present they were indebted for the use of a piano to the kindness of Mr. Hoffmann, who bad lent one till the end of the present term, so that they might carry on a dancing class at the school.

With regard to the boarding establishment Miss Hodges reported that one boarder left at the end of last term and two others wero enrolled, making a total of 14. Though this seemed a small number, it was taxing severely tho accommodation afforded by the house they wore at present occupying. It was resolved to hire a piano from Mr. Hoffmann. HEADMASTER’S SALARY. After conferring in committee on a request from tho principal of the Boys’ School for an increase in salary, if was decided to grant an increase of £IOO as from the beginning of tbo year, and that the principal bo informed that at the end of the year the board will further’consider the position if it finds it is able to do so. EXTENSION OF BOYS’ SCHOOL. The chairman and Mr. Ewing wero deputed to confer with the board’s architect, Mr. Messenger, with regard to drawing up plans for tho extension of tho Bovs’ School in brick or concrete. BUILDING PROPOSALS. Dr. W. J. Anderson, Director of Education, wrote stating that the department was now in communication with tho Public Trustee with regard to tho circumstances "under which tho authority for a loan was obtained by him at tile instance of the hoard in September last. Pending his reply, . and any further action in the matter, he was directed to ask tho board to. submit its building proposals for consideration .so that the department might have an opportunity of judging how far the expenditure could be approved for tbo purposes of deduction under .the conditions determining the net annual income of tho school as defined by section 86 of tho Act. For the purposes of this statement the board was at liberty to assume that the half cost of erecting a girls’ school tip to tho amount of £2OOO (total inclusive cost £4000) on an approved plan ivould be provided by the department. THE BOARD’S FINANCES. Tho secretary estimated there would be £1689 to enable tho board to carry on for the next two months. Mr. Ewing said tho figures were better than he bad calculated they would be. The Chairman remarked that tho position was improving. Mr. Webster: I am glad to hoar.that. GENERAL. It was decided that a letter be sent
