The race meeting of the North Taranaki Hunt, to bo held on July 29, is being eagerly awaited by Taranaln sportsmen There is a. long spoil from racing in Taranaki, from ALay till .December, and the Hunt meeting vvid prove a pleasant break. The thro* races for hacks have been endowed with 45 sovs. each. Taranaki is the home of good hacks, ami owners will no doubt avail themselves or this opportunity to endeavour to secure feed money during a slack period. Four events are set down for hunters, and as big entries are practically assured the racing should prove very interesting. The big race is the North Taranaki Hunt Steeplechase, which is worth 300 sovs. and a cup valued at 20 sovs. There is always a keen struggle for this race, and this year tho contest promises to prove if anything more interesting than in previous years. The Hunt is giving away 340 sovs. in stakes apportioned over seven events lac piogranur.e is a very ambitious one, but tho Hunt need not fear on this score, for good entries and a record crowd are practically certain The totnlisatdr will undoubtedly add zest to the meeting. For tlie benefit of owners. I give the qualifications of a hunter for events decided -after June 30:—A horse is eligible after .having been genuinely limited live times and also that the owner is a subscriber to hunts to Hie extent of the full member’s subscription. Qualification certificates arc obtainable only from masters. Multiply is said to be a certain starter over hurdles at Hie Napmv meeting. Vocation and Gofcien King arc two South Island recruits to the hurdle ranks. The MuUmd gelding Toki gave a sat- . isfactory display over hurdles before ho loft EUerslie. The much-raced Mount Victoria was tried over hurdles recently, but gave anything like a promising display. Draft was given a schooling lesson over the small liutdles at Wanganui the other morning, when the Aianiapoto gelding jumped very well. The cs-Hawora horse, Chaminado, is now an inmate of P. Jones’ stable at Auckland. Chaminado was schooled over the pony hurdles on Tuesday and ho gave a better display than previously. After a s’jru’t respite AVarsten lias rejoined tho active brigade at Iliccnrton. During her spoil ALirtian’s daughter thickened out a lot, and she is now in rare trim to start a preparation for spring racing, with tho New Zealand Cup as her special objective. A. J. The Aucklander aspects to return to the Dominion in time for the Wellington meeting. Tho son of Flcetfnot was one of the best of his ago in the Dominion this year, but met one a bit better in Reputation; otlmnvDe he would probably have proven the lecord stakeearner in one season for Chokeboro Lodge, only the narrowest of margins separating him from the thick cud of the purse on three occasions. At the V.I'.C. Birthday meeting on Juno 6, F. M'Cabe, the New Zealand horseman, incle the winner of both the hurdle and steeplechase races. He rode Widden, who carried 12.3, to victory in the Hurdles, and Moonbarra, 11.1, in - ! the Steeples.
