WAITARA.
FROM OtTR OWN COR it r.S i'ON 1; I.VT Juno IS. What with the election, the weather, and the Tikorangi Jubilee, business has been well nigh at a standstill this week. Only twice since its formation has tho local patriotic committee failed tj form a quorum, the second occasion being this week, when owing to tho visit of •Sir Joseph Word to the town there was ono short of the required number. The farmers of tho district will miss tho Wallnire this year, as I learn that slag is likely to 'he very scarce and dear, while soma other fertiliser's are quite unprocurable. Hitherto twothirds of the supply of slag has come from Germany, whilf in the production of potashes that country had the monopoly. It is to be hoped that this and the Home country will not fail to capture so important a trade from the enemy. This part op the Empire is more dependent upon_ artificial manures than the Home laud, whore, owing to the fact that for several months in the year stock is stall-fed, natural maunre is, of course, the principal food for the land, artificial fertilisers taking a second place. Here, however, the position is reversed, or perhaps it would be more correct to say that the chemist has matters entirely on his own, supplemented by green manuring. “Putting your foot in jt” is the vernacular of describing a mistake, but the lady who puts both feet into a pair of , those all-pure wool black-ribbed stockings offered for the last time for a shilling a pair at Tho Big Store makes no mistake, and many there are' who know it. Do yon ?*
