Seen to-day regarding the statement made by tho Auckland manager of the Colonial Sugar Refinery Company in replying to tho telegraphed statement that the K Jam Factory have to close down for a period owing to being unable to secure tho necessary supplies of sugar, Mr. Kirkpatrick said that the manager's remarks _as telegraphed were very unfair to Ills firm, and some reply was necessary. Fgr instance, it Wits’stated that the company was unable to supply companies for speculative purposes. This implies that tl*e firm nad supplies upon whirl) it intended to profit in some way. This is absolutely incorrect. All the firm desired was enough sugar to keep tho works going. Further ho had offered to pay an incrcaNod price for sugar If ho could he supplied, simply to save closing down the works and inflicting hardship on the workers.
