Of forty-four men who returned by tho Mokoia to-day, four were sent to the public hospital for treatment and the remaining forty were placed on the quarantine island. M'Ewen, about' 24 years of age, attempted to commit, suicide at Trentham to-day by cutting his throat. Ha was brought in to the city hospital, where it was found his injuries were not of a serious nature. WAIRARAPA LIBERALITY. MASTERTON, June 16, A two days’ canvass of Wairarapa has resulted in over £BOOO being subscribed for the wounded soldiers’ fund. This is apart from the Allies’ relief fund, and other funds, for which over £30,000 has been subscribed. It is expected to raise £50,000 in Wairarapa for. the wounded soldiers’ fund. The Wairarapa executive of the wan fund intends to make a big effort on behalf of the wounded soldiers. Yesterday, Mr. A. P. Whatman, of Masterton, gave £IOOO to the fnnd, and this has been followed by contributions of £SOO each by Messrs. Gny C. Williams, Masterton, and John Martin, Martinborough; £2OO each by Dan Cameron, Martinborough, and D. and E. B. Cameron, Martinborough; £IOO each by A. D. M'Leod, Martinborough, A. M‘Donald and J. H. M'Dougalhi The sum of £4056 was raised,-and £30,000 is the target. ■ HOKITIKA BELGIAN FUND. HOKITIKA, Jtme 16. At a public meeting held to-night -a statement in connection with the Belgian Relief Fund was submitted. As a result of the local effort to relieve the distress of the Belgians, it was reported that the sum of £6126 has been , raised. LEVIN CARNIVAL. LEVIN, June 17. The takings at yesterday’s carnival amounted to £320, and many amounts have to be made up yet. The above amount with £llOO previously raised, brings the Levin contribution DOSrnivai funds to over £I4OO.
