LAWN TENNIS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The championship finals of tho Now Plymouth Ciub were played on Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather. J. C. Nicholson defeated C. B. Webster G—l, 7—5 in tho men’s singles, and Miss Brewster defeated Miss V. Simpson 6—l, 6—3 in tho final of tho ladies’ singles. There wero a fair number ol spectators present, and both game* provided some interesting tenuis. The ladies’ singles was the first ono played. Miss Brewster won tho first five games in succession, and although her opponent won the sixth game, Brewster secured the next, and with it the set, 6—l. In the second set, Miss Simpson made a bettor stand, but Miss Brewster was playing at the top of her form and maintained a lead of one or tsvo games throughout, winning the* sot 6—3. This is the sixth time Miss Brewster has won the championship. In the men’s singles Nicholson also won tile first five games, and the set 6—l. In tho second sot Nicholson drew ahead to 3—l, but Webster evened up to 3 all. Then Nicholson won the next two games, and was “vantage in” three times in the ninth game, which was one of the two games of the match. Webster managed to pull this off, and drew level*at 5 all, but Nicholson won the eleventh game to love, and tho next to 30, thus .securing the game, set and match. Nicholson ha< now held the championship since it was inaugurated twelve years ago— a great performance.

NEW PLYMOUTH r. PARK. A match was placed on Saturday between repicM'ntatives of the New Plymouth and Park clubs, on the latter’.courts. The day was an ideal one for tennis, and a most enjoyable time was spout, victory resting with Now Plymouth. A bountiful afternoon’ lea was provided by the ladies of tho Parle Club.
