A COyiPUCATED POSITION. A special meeting of the Taranaki County Council was helrl on AVednesday afternoon. Councillor J. Brown presiding. There wore also present: Councillors T!. Stevens, M. Hopson, 0. Billing, C. Andrews, 0. Al'Allurn, A. Alnrton, J. Andrews, J, R. Hill. Tho Chairman explained that ho had convened the meeting to consider matters in connection with the proposed merger of the Aloa Road Board district into the county. The fact that it was only a portion of the district that was being merged complicated matters somewhat, and to set all doubts at rest ho had referred tho question to Mr. T. I’. Martin for his opinion. Ho gallic: ed from this that a fresh special order would have to he made when the withdrawing petitions were sworn, and that the annexation could nut take place until March 31, liTlo. It would also appear that tho annexation would alter the boundaries of the A 1 oa and Ahingorei ridings, but ho. personally, was doubtful upon this point, and had referred tho question hack to Mr. Martin. It would he necessary when tho merger took place to dissolve tho Aloa. Road Board and arrange for the election of a new hoard. Tho previous special order was rescinded and a new one passed. Councillor Hopson remarked that Air. Alarlin's opinion agreed with Ids contention that tho merger would alter the riding boundaries, for which reason ho had opposed the proposal,. Me called for a. division on the motion lor a fresh special order, the voting being;— Ayes; Tho Chairman, Counei 1 - lors Stevens, M‘Ailuni, Morton. J. Andrews ami Hill; Does; Councillors Hopson, Billing, and C. Andrews, A special meeting of the council will 1,0 hold on September 17 to confirm tho special order.
