‘ASSAULT BY SHIP’S COOK. PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, July 8. James M'Ginn, cook on the barque Mamtrewa, was charged .in court today with assaulting the chief mate by striking him on tho head with a bar of iron. The blow was a very severe one, cutting to the bone. A sentence of two months’ impritoumont was imposed. THE PLUNKETT SOCIETY. WELLINGTON, July 8. At tho annual conference of the Plunkeb Society tho Dunodin remit that Mrs. Truhy King lie elected joint general president with Dr. Truby King was carried by acclamation. The morning sitting was principally occupied with a discussion of the relationship of the society to the State, the general feeling of delegates being that tho functions of tho society’s nurses wore different from those of district nui'sos, being of a more educational nature. ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT. WELLINGTON, July 8. Tho charges against Horace Orammond of embezzling suras amounting to £1435 belonging to Thus. Cook aud Son is proceeding in, the Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that. Gramraond received moneys in the course of tho firm’s business and accounted for them in the usual manner; also that ho drew cheques in tho firm’s rutmo aud dashed them. 'The butts of the cheque forms were not filled in.
