PERSONAL.
Owing to the weather, Mr. Herries has abandoned his East Coast tour, and is returning to Gisborne. The funeral of the late Mrs. George M'Loan took place at Hawera on Wednesday, and was very largely attended by settlers from all parts of Taranaki, widespread sympathy being felt for the family of the deceased lady, who, with her husband, had been among the pioneers of the district.
The funeral of the late Mr. John French took place on Thursday. The remains were convoyed to their last resting-place by the deceased’s comrades, the coflih being enshrouded in the flag which ho had fought under in the Maori war. Bugler Walker sounded ’The Last Post.”
Captain Adjutant R. H. Matthews, of tho Auckland Regimental District, is spending a holiday here, and is staying at tho Criterion Hotel. Captain Matthews, it will bo remembered, formerly resided at Inglewood. Ho went to South Africa with, tho first New Zealand contingent, and saw a considerable amount of active service, and on his return to tho Dominion received a staff appointment.
