EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING,

The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was continued on Wednesday, when the following business was dealt with after the Herald went to press;.—

OVERSEER S REPORT. The Overseer (Mr. C. H. Moore) reported as lollow.s; Tiie now school at Mimi had been completed and the section fenced. Alterations to the windows of one classroom at Urenui had been carried out and an extra lank erected. The Hurimoana school had 'been cut out, ready to bolt together in sections. Ho suggested that it uould be advisable to have the site settled before the roads got worse. The Pukcho residence work had been started, while the Pnrangi school was being painted. Materia! would soon he on the site of the lir.puha re.sidonce. and a start would he made with this work .shortly. Central School; As instructed, improvements had been made in the ventilation of the front classroom in the oast wing; it was necessary to remove the lower part of the Gothic sashes and replace them with movable sashes and frame.*. He would suggest that the corresponding window in the west wing be treated the same way. The shelter shed at I‘Trxroy had been painted and several small repairs attended to. The floor of the classroom in tho infant room was all more or less worm-eaten. I!c recommended that the whole 01 this flour he renewed when favourable. The Kalin ata resilience haul been inspected. Several small repairs were necessary. ,\; Uapuha the teacher wisiied to have some sort of division between the classes. Ho thought that, a lightcoloured curtain would answer the purpose. Posts had been supplied to the Ngacre committee, and an iron gate ordered for Uniakania.

The Finance Committee recommended that the board purchase a motorcycle and side-car ami sell same to the overseer on time payment, and that the board allow tho overseer CTO per year for running expenses, the board to bare no further liability, and that the matte;' of repayment of the cost of bicycle fin left ill the hands of the chairman to arrange.—Tito recommendation was given effect to. lirniMOAXA SCHOOL. The secretary of the Hurlmoana School Committee wrote that the question of a new school at Jlurimoana was discussed at a meeting of householders, and as, by reason ot the continued delay in the provision of a habitable school building and a competent teacher a number of children had been sent to other schools, it was decided that the present need was for the accommodation of children on tho railway works at Hnrimoana. The chairman was authorised to inspect the Hnrimoana and Tahora districts and report as to school requirements generally. KOTARE .SCHOOL SITE. The Chief Inspector reported on tho application of the Kotare settlers for the establishment of a school in that district. He recommended that, provided the necessary arrangements could bo made for the use of a building and the services of a teacher, the request, of the settlers bo acceded to. He understood that a lonelier could be secured. and the Public Works Department had been written to to see ft permission would be given the board to use the Government wharo as a school building. Tho 'eport was adopted. WEST END PLAYGROUND. A letter was received from tho West End School Committee, again urging tho necessity for enlarging tho school playground, in view of the increased ami increasing attendance at the school. It was decided to inform the committee that this question was brought under the notice of the Minister of Education when he was in New Plymouth, but ho was not favourable to the expenditure of the largo sum of ir.oncv necessary to acquire the land. GENERAL. The Secretary of the Central School Committee wrote forwarding the following resolution: “That, while there is necessity for a side school at Vogeltown for the lower standards, this committee is of opinion that under present conditions a lull-time school is not required.”—Received. Tho question of enlarging the infants’ room at-the Stratford School, according to an application by the committee, was referred to the inspector for a report. The necessity for enlarging tho playground will again bo brought under the notice of the Education Department.

The following matters were referred to the overseer;—Uepaiis to residence at Kairnata ; new tank (if necessary) at Ookura; general repairs at Tuna; repair of blinds at Stratford; supply a new gale and a report on tho ventilation at Stanley; repairs to out-offices at York; alteration of windows and repair of asphalt at Central; and a new floor when convenient at Fitzroy. The Educational Institute will lie informed that leave of absence will be granted to a teacher so as to enable the Taranaki branch to bo represented at the conference of tho institute, which will be held in 'Wellington in July. Tho following resignations were accepted;—Mrs. Arms, solo teacher, Patna; Miss Irene Dew hirst, assistant, Norfolk; Miss L. Bose, solo teacher, Okoke; Mr. J. K. ,Sullivan, assistant, Central; Miss Ullmer, sole teacher, Carrington. The following teachers wero granted leave of absence;—Miss I. Edwards (Makahu), Mr. 0. Johnson (Fitjsroy), Miss K. C. Wilson (Marco), Miss Harrison (Waitara). A grant of £SO was authorised for the addition of a bathroom and washhouse at tho teacher's residence at the "Lincoln school. Tho Bird School Committee will be informed, in answer to its letter of March 20. that the question of enlarging tho school has again been brought under tho notice of the department. Miss I. M. Hitch was appointed assistant in cookery at Stratford and Inglewood, and Miss A. J. Findlay as trainee at the New Plymouth Technical College. It was reported that Miss Tiplady had resigned her position at tho Technical College to take up another appointment under tho board. It was decided to grant a subsidy of £2 10s towards the cost of concreting the floor of tho shelter shed at the Tuna school. The Marco School Committee applied for a subsidy towards the cost of laying down an asphalt tennis court.—-Re-fused. Tho Stanley School Committee .were

granted a subsidy of £ for £ up to £3 towards the cost of tho gravelling work required. Accounts amounting to £3589 were passed for payment.
