FLOODS AT GISBORNE.
VERY HEAVY RAINFALL , PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE, March 24. .It has been raining steadily during the past three days, and 'all rivers and creeks in the district are badly swollen. Owing to a washout on the railway, to-day’s train for the north could not progress beyond Ocoko, a small country centre, and rho lady passengers had to be accommodated in the railway camp, while the men of the party had ,to accommodate themselves in the railway cars. A temporary railway bridge acro.-is the Waipoa River, on the line to Napier, in the course of construction, was carried away. To-night the rain continues steadily* and at Mole, 'ten inches have falien. <in 24 hours, while in Gisborne oyer three inches have fallen in two days. The Tnranganui River, on which the port is built, is running high, and all vessels have been double-moored. A crisis is expected in the harbour, when, the tide comas in about midnight. Two launches moored in the harbour were swept out to sea to-night. THE WATER SUBSIDING. 1 GISBORNE, March 25. The floods in the Waipaoa River are subsiding, and beyond breaking the Public Works temporary bridge -no damage was done at Motu. The floods were the highest fur years. A report from Port Awanui states that the Waipn River is in heavy flood and is causing loss of sheep. T'he extent of tire damage is not yet known. The water is nearly up to the decking of the Waiapu Bridge, both approaches to which have been washed away. / The river is now going down.
