FITZROY HALL SITE.

DISCUSSED BY THE COUNCIL. At the Borough Council meeting on Monday night there was a discussion with reference to the question of providing a new hall site at Fitzroy in substitution of the present site, which is required lor tramway car-sheds. The council at its last meeting decided to move the hall into another position on the present section until such time as the whole of the land was required for tramway buildings, and that no action be taken at present towards acquiring a new site for the hall. Councillor Jackson, in accordance with notice of motion, moved that the latter part of tho council’s resolution lie rescinded. He said that by rescinding that portion of the resolution the connciil would not bo committing itself in any way. His suggestion was that a committee be formed to go into the whole question and the council could then discuss it on its merits when it came forward in another form. He thought most of tho council would agree that Fitzroy was entitled to some consideration under the circumstances, and if some scheme could be devised to finance the thing without penalising the council too much it would get over tho trouble. Councillor Collis seconded the moti in.

Councillor Kibby said ho was quite satisfied that the council would do tfce right thing in rescinding that part of the resolution. Tho .Mayor said it would not commit the council to anything.

Councillor Wilson: What is at the back of it r*• There has been no reason advanced for rescinding tho resolution, and 1 do not feel inclined to vote that a decision which was arrived at after mature consideration should he rescinded without some good reason being advanced. If there is any new proposition in connection with the matter then the council ns a whole should be informed.

Councillor Clarke took up the same attitude as Councillor "Wilson. Councillor Jackson said lie believed it would be possible to make arrangements whereby some of the purchase tnonov [or a new hall site could como out of tho reserve fund instead of it all coming out of the tramways fund. This was His object in submitting the motion. A committee might be able to put a different complexion on tho whole thing.

Councillor Wilson remarked that the whole thing could be gone into and a report submitted to the council without rescinding the resolution.

Councillor Jackson, however, contended that it would be better to start with a clean sheet. Councillor Collis thought the Fitz.i ;v people wore entitled to some cons’deratinn.

Councillor Kibby considered an injustice had been done to tho Fitzroy end of the town. It would be very unfair for the council to take that piece of ground and not replace it with another hall site.

Councillor Alamider was onposed to tHo motion unless some good reasons wero advanced for rescinding the previous resolution. When the present site was rennired for extensions in connection with the tramways then would he the time to look around for another hall site. Councillor Clarke said that when rhe hall was shifted into its new position it would suit requirements for eight or nine years probably, and at any rate he was opposed to buying sites and building halls in tho outskirts whilst the council sat in the present building. After further diseussirth ihe motion was negatived. Councillors Kibby. Jackson Collis and Amhnrv voting in its favour, and th" Afayor. Councillors Healy, Sykes. Clarke. Tabor. Wilson, Mannix and Alnnnder against it.
