THE STRIKE.

LATEST KEWS. A DISMAL FAILURE, MESSRS. BUDDO AND FORBES PIQUED. SPECIAL TO HERALD. WELLINGTON, Nor. 14. Dwellers on the hills had plain Evidence this morning that the strike was rapidly .subsiding. Many ships were working. The chivi strength of the Heel federations is now ihe miners, who are tho foundation of the syndicalist structure. Last night’s meeting of protest at the imprisonment of tho leaders was impressively unonthusmstic. It was the lamest and iiuuesi assembly since tho start of ihe strike. he federation’s secretary, Mr. ILc-kcy, .drove desperately and vainly to galvanise the crowd, and dually in despair alleged that twenty mounted specials had ti:-d their horses to the tenccs of the prisoners' homes and terrified the women and children. Tho audience obviously disbelieved the statement, and 10-Uay the story is denounced as absolute fiction. . Though many drivers have returned to wor.:. the militant section is continuing the strike under pretence that they have merely stopped work. Stables arc picketed and scouts intimidated one firm's drivers this morning. Specials word summoned and the pickets dispersed. The horsemen guarding strategic points have been experimentally reduced to single mounted regulars, who arc patrolling the routes lx tween tho wharves, warehouses and stations. Lawless interference is unlikely except in remote parts. The specials at the entrance to the wharves stopped Messrs. Bucldo and Forbes, members of Parliament. The regular constable offered to pass thorn in accordance with instructions issued by circular to-day, but the members were piqued am! retired. Tho Ilimitnngi arrived from Timaru direct with a full In.id of produce. WELLINGTON, Nov. M. Many of the on tho wharf are making between £4 ant! €5 a, week, in addition to maintenance. LETTER OF LYTTELTON WATERSIDEHS. PFR PRESS ASSOCIATION*. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 14. The secretary of tho Employers’ Association, on behalf of 4ho local committee appointed to open Lyttelton, has forwarded a letter to the watorsiders, in which he states that it must bo apparent that the trade of tho province cannot be suspended indefinitely. If outsiders take work and desire to remain, their services will be retained. He asks if the union will register under the Arbitration Act and agree to work at once. - A striker charged with insulting behaviour towards a permanent employee of tho Union Company was admonished and ordered to leave tho port before sundown.
