FIFTY YEARS AGO.

TARANAKI’S EARLY HISTORY. (From Taranaki Herald. 1863.) •Saturday, November' 14.—A now Ministry was announced on October. 30, as follows:—Hon. F. Whitaker, Attor-ney-General, with first seat in tho Ministry; Hon. W. Fox, Colonial Secretary and Native Almister; Hon. Reader Wood, Colonial Treasurer; Hon. T. B. Gillies, Postmaster-General; Hon. T. Russell, War Afinister. Mr. Fox bad tried to form a Ministry with himself as Premier, hut on these terms could get no colleagues. Tho policy of the now Ministry is in its main features identical with that ol the lute ouc —to bring in 20,000 military settlers (chiefly from England); to confiscate enough land for them and to pay the expenses of the war; and to make roads throughout tho island. It having been reported that there; were Natives in the neighbourhood of Kaipakopako on Tuesday last, the two companies of Bushrangers, under Captain Webster and Lieutenant Jonas, proceeded to that place before daylight on Wednesday and lay lor some time in ambush, but without seeing any Natives, nor could any tracks bo lound. Captain Alace and the mounted men. who were co-operating, and who had gone on to Sentry Hill as a “draw,” not finding th/ enemy come out, went on as far as an enclosure by Manutalii and brought away two working bullocks. They saw one Maori and several tracks, but were not interfered with. In a Provincial Gazette of Saturday last it is notified that Air. H. B. Richmond has resigned tho office of Provincial Treasurer, and that Mr. Theophilus White has been appointed in bis stead ; and that Air. White has resigned his seat in the Provincial Council and his office as Deputy-Auditor. Air. Charles Stilton has been appointed Sub-Inspec-. tor of Brands, vice Air. C. Al. Kingston resigned. The Daily Southern Cross of the 6th inst. says that along tho hanks of the Waikato, between Alercmero and Rangiriri, there aro about 500 acres of excellent potatoes in tho ground. Those will fall into tho hands of the troops, to whom this will bo a welcome addition to a remarkably simple daily bill-of-farc.
