TARATA.
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. , Sept. lo.—At tho conclusion of the meeting of tho dairy company on> Saturday, MV. Bullock addressed thofarmers in tlfo interests 'of tho" proposed Taranaki Farmers’, Cp-opcrative Society v Mr. Bullock explained that Mr. Bnckendge, the organiser of the company, had paid two visits to Tarata, but for various reasons had been unablo to hold a meeting. Ho had, therefore, realising the importance of the movement, , undertaken to bring the matter before them; that day. v Mr. Bullock then gave a short account of the sort of business which the company proposed to do, and showed how it would benefit the farmers by reducing the rates of commission on sales, by procuring requisites such as manures, seeds and implements at ,a cheaper rate, and by being able, through combination, to regulate the marketing of produce in tho Home markets. He explained; the basis on' which the company proposed to finance and wound ■ up by stating that ho would be pleased to answer any questions that might be asked and’to receive applications for shares. At the conclusion of the address, several questions were asked-and answered, and the .opinion was generally expressed that tho movement was one which deserved the support, of every settler, and a number of shares were, apnlied for. ■ .- 1 ■ I understand that Mr. Bullock had a 1 very successful meeting at Pukeho last week, when almost all present applied for shares. , : - ; ! From what I can learn, tho company is pretty, well assured of flotation,, and will probably proceed to allotment next month. Negotiations are, lam informed, being made for the'purchase, on helialf of the company, of two. ..of tho largest auctioneering businesses in. Taranaki. Should the company bo successful in completing these negotiations on" a sound financial baste, ’tho ultimate success of the business is assured. The results obtained by similar associations in Canterbury, Southland and the Waikato should nervo the Taranaki farmers to persevere. The comparative failure of similar associations in Taranaki.in ■the past has been, largely due to paucity of capital in the first place, and lack of support by the people interested in the second. 'The promoters of this new company are avoiding the first difficulty, by their determination not to commence operations until their finance is assured, whether tho second trouble can be overcome time alone can prove. The fine days which wo have occasionally , experienced lately have had the effect of rousing a few of our tennis players from their winter hibernation, and as tho courts are in very good condition now we may soon expect to see them fully occupied in any spare ti.nio that can be found. The club is holding a euchre party and dance in the hall on tub 18th, and . the annual meeting of the club takes place on the Saturday evening following, when all. members and intending members arc invited to attend. , ~ , The Tarata Rifle Club, which at one time could hold up its head boldly among its compeers* seems to be about moribund. This is a pity, as the club . still holds a number of valuable trophies, tho fate of which. has not yet been decided. It is a pity that the T/efencc Department does not post, a few of tho young fellows in the district to tho club as that might revive the interest of some of the, older members and incidentally teach the young fellows to shoot straight. ", The country is looking remarkably well, and settlers are busy with plough, etc., preparing for tho coming season. I understand that a -considerably increased area of land will bo broken up this year. Tho mild weather experienced tliis winter should have favoured a good . lambing, but so far I. have not heard of any results. Next month I hope 1 to be able to give you some of'the returns. .
