TARANAKI v. HAWKE’S BAY. , «FECIAL TO HERALD. , AVANGANUI, Sept. 13. Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay played their final games to-day in so tar as tho 1913 ladies’ championship hockey tournament is concerned. Tho result of this match was regarded as a foregone conclusion and the wise ones were proved right, Hawke’s Bay winning comfortably, by ten goals to one. . The Taranaki team was the same as usual, but for Hnwko’s Bay Aliss Wqodsstood down in favour of Miss Grcenside. Tho big score would have been doubled had not Misses Arthur (goal) and Eileen Ponu and Lyo (full-backs) played great games, their defensive work being marvellous, for either one or the other would get in the way and nullify What seemed to bo non-stoppablo goals. This was a striking-tribute to the fine game played by Hawke’s Bay, who wore continually knocking. Hawke's Bay are now out of the tournament and the final will bo played on Thursday between Canterbury (who must bo considered very lucky to get this far) and Wairarapa, and if Canterbury does not have an unprecedented run oi good fortune Wairarapa should just about win. Immediately after tho commencement Hawke’s Bay attacked and many scrambles ensued in Taranaki’s territory. Aliss Pitt headed her opponents, outplayirig them and shot hard, but Aliss Lyo stopped tho boll. Hawke’s Bay kept to it and a shot by Miss I. Dobbyn was effectively stopped by Alisa Arthur. Then a peculiar thing happened. A Hawke’s Bay girl shot from outside the circle and cannoning off a defender it rolled into the goal. The referee allowed a goal, making Hawke’s Bay otic, Taranaki nil. This goal was afterwards disallowed by mutual consent. A twenty-five followed a corner against Taranaki and Miss APEwon relieved, taking tho hall down to Hawke’s Bay's circle, where'Miss Swain relieved anil Mias Burden cleared, and Miss Pitt entered the yellows’ circle, a hot drive being blocked. Aliss Pitt had another hard shot, but tho ball went well wide. Taranaki came aivay from the bully off, Bay clearing from a corner hit. An exciting interlude followed a good run by Aliss J. Dobbyn, who sent the leather out to Aliss Harrison, and she put it back into tho circle, where Miss Topping did tho needful—Hawke’s Bay 1, Taranaki nil. Tho yellows camo away, from tho bully off, and when the spell was taken play was in Bay’s half. boon, after tho resumption Aliss Robertson hit tho ball upheld and was taken by Aliss Gordon, who passed out to tho wing, and Alias Pitt put in a hard high one.—Hawko’s Bay 2, Taranaki nil, Taranaki attacked and a return rush was instituted, amt a good shot from tho circle by Miss Harrison was well saved by Miss Arthur. Not to bo denied, Bay came again, and Aliss Gordon sent in a good one which went into tho not.—Hawke’s Bay 3, Taranaki nil. Immediately afterwards Aliss Greensido scored her first goal of tho tournament, Hawke’s Bay 4, Taranaki nil. A niinuto later Aliss Pitt centred, and n nice shot from Miss J. Dobbyn put the finishing touches on a good piece of work.—Hawko’s Bay 5, Taranaki nil. After a Taranaki sortie (in which Aliss Al’Ewan was conspicuous) had been repulsed, Bay once again moved off, and Aliss J. Dobbyn again shot successfully. Hawke’s Bay 6', Taranaki nil. Then Miss Harrison went off down tho line and her shot was taken on the stick by Miss Arthur. Bay kept up tho pressure, and a shot by Alisa Grcenside missed by a fraction. Then Miss Greensido got round on one from tho blind side and scored.— Hawke's Bay 7, Taranaki nil. Another minute and Aliss Pitt had landed Bay's eighth goal. A shot onco more by Aliss Pitt glanced off Miss Arthur’s stick into tho net, and Bay wero 9 ifp, Taranaki immediately retaliated, and a good shot' by Aliss liarrop went into the goal. 'Another shot by Miss Topping for Bay wont home, and tho game ended—Hawke’s Bay 10, Taranaki 1.
