KINGS WHO ARE IN TRADE.

MONARCHS AS SHOPKEEPERS. Many of us are apt to look upon kings and other exalted personages as lucky people who are above the need of money, and sort of play at being really serious persons. But quite a number of reigning monarohs* are glad to add to their revenues by some sort of trade 'or other, and as the modern royalty is quit© on© of the most busy people on earth it is marvellous how some of them manage, with all tho other important things they have to consider, to bo successful tradesmen into tho bargain. The great German Emperor, for instance, owns a porcelain factory, as also does the-King of Saxony, both industries that require a great deal of business acumen to run successfully. Few women know, perhaps, that the celebrated “Hohenlohe” corsets are made in. tho factory presided over by Duke Ulrich of Wurtemburg. The King of Servia, who has been so busy lately, doubtless has given few thoughts to his motor-car agency, in which he is greatly interested, though perhaps he may-have .to.make practical use both for himself and his soldiers of some of the patent medicines in the manufacture of which he has a pecuniary interest. The, autocratic Czar of all the Russians has also stooped to dabble in - trade, and has turned his huge tracts of forest into a satisfactory source of revenue. He has don© much to develop the timber trad© between Russia and England. Candle-making is a rather novel trade for a woman, but .the Archduchess Frederick of Austria has a process of her own by which sho makes a scented variety of wax candle, and is able, to Supply the palace with all the candles needed for the daily illumination, a by no moans small task. How nice it must be to have, a mother who makes toys ..for you, just th© toys you wanfc—toy soldiers dressed in quaint uniforms, and animals painted wonderful colours, to say nothing o£ • doll with a particular stylo of nose that cannot b© bought at an ordinary shop. All these delights are enjoyed by the children of Princess Carl of Sweden, who is a very clever toy-maker, and is • said to construct many of the toys used in her children’s nursery, to their great pride and delight. Tho ytfung King of Spain, who is aU ways to the for© in any modern movement, is said to have .invested a very considerable -portion - of” his capital in a motor and bicycle factory near Madrid.- v a v Another enterprising royalty the Grand Duke of Saxe Weimer, who is connected with, several businesses, including a butcher’s establishment and a Berlin publishing house, two concerns that-would seem to require very - different systems of .management, but ' no doubt the royal Duke is sufficiently versatile to oversee them both successfully. I 1 . The beautiful Crown Princess of Romania, who is usually associated In one’s mind with only the moet romantic 1 ideas, has, it would seem, a very different and more utilitarian side to her activities, for -she has founded and financed one of the largest quill toothpick factories in tho world. Another royal lady, the 1 Duchess ofGuise, makes a speciality of millinery, - and some of the’hats that she turns out would do credit to on© of tho firstclass establishments in-the Rue de la Paix, and although this is a form of trad© that has been greatly overdone by lesser Tadics, tho Duchess is always sure of an undiminished-popularity-in; this direction. ROYAL HOTEL-KEEPERS. Hotel-keeping is a branch of trad© that a good many people would shrink ; from venturing upon, there aro so many different kinds of-people to please, and tho visitors are, of course, mere birds . of -passage, here to-day and gone-to-morrow, and ever there looms Targe on tho horizon for tho proprietor the terrors of the “off” - season. But one royal couple, the Duke and Duchess Carl Theodore -of ■ Bavaria, notwithstanding tho attendant difficulties, own .a very successful hotel at Tegernseo, a place about twenty-nine miles south of Munich, The hotel has the advantage of being situated amidst the most beautiful scenery at the side of the lake, and is very well patronised. . Another royal hotel-keeper is the King of Wurtemburg, who owns two hotels within his domains.. ' Tea shops seem to find great .favour, too, "with royal personages, and it is said that one of tho most fashionable tea shops in Bond Street was started and financed by en© of our own Princesses; at least the patrons like to think, as they sip their tea and eat the delectable cakes provided, that this is the case. ■Whether her Royal Highness did or did not start the tea room is, however, a much-debated point, . but anyway’i this royal lady has certainly shown by the maimer in which she has administered the various charitable undertak- : ings in which she has taken an interest that she has a sound business head, and probably could, if she chose, take a foremost place in the ranks of royalties who go in for trade. „ TRY THIS HOME-MADE.
