INGLEWOOD.

FHOU OCR- OWN CORRESPONDENT. September 15.—A special meeting of tlio Inglewood Borough Council was held on Saturday evening to receivetho report of the Works Committee regarding the results of tboir inquiriesms to a steam roller, etc. Tho foreman (Mr. Scally) stated that ho had seenthe representative of Messrs. Booth, MacDonald and Co. on'tho matter, and that ho had quoted an eight-ton roller and scarifier at £625 and a crusher at £75.

His Worship tho Mayor stated that at first ho had thought that tho expenditure would bo too big, but on going ■into tho matter ho found* that by tho council using their own crushing plant '.there would bo a saving of something like 7s per yar d on asphalting and concrete korbing and channelling, as at; present all tho metal and screenings lor that work have to’ bo purchased from outside. In fact on the-work enumerated in tho estimates- published last week there would bo a saving of somo, £252, or more than a third of tho cost of the plant. His Worship also stated that bo had had an interview with tho chairman of tho Moa Road Board (Mr. H. Trimble) to try to find out if that body was likely to bo getting a roller in tho near future, but that that gentleman, had been very non-committal and not very much definite information had been forthcoming.

The matter was gone into very fully, and tlie pros and cons were well weighed up. Xo formal motion was moved ■in tho matter, but it was unanimously agreed that a roiling and crushing plant should bo included in tho estimates to bo placed before tho public to-night (Monday). Tho Mayor promised to go into the ■matter very fully with Mr. Scally, and have an amended schedule to lay before the council at a special meeting of that body, which would bo liold previous to tho public meeting, in order that it might be adopted formally. The difference between tho-old scl/j-' dulo and tho amended ono is as follows:—Windsor Road (£135), £l2O 16s; Standish Street (£107), £92 6s; Matai Stroeot (£133), £lO9 Os; Brooks Street (£37 17s 6d), £37 17s 6d; Moa Street (£290 16s), £222 4s; Rata Street (£527 15s), £444 14s; Outfield Street (£199 sb), £l6B 18s; Kelly Street (£99 os), £66 9s; Carrington Street (£326 4a), £273 10s; Main Street (£lO6 10s), £lO6 10s; Rimu Street (£122 10«), £96 10s; 14 chains reforming and metalling footpath, Elliott St., from Carrington to Rata Streets, £25 (£25); 12 chains footpath do., do., in James St., £2l 3s (£2l as); 26 chains footpath, formation and metalling, Tawa Strccct (both sides), £39 (£39). Added later; Reforming, and metalling Kelly Street West,. £100; water cart, say £65; roller and scarifier, £625; crusher, £75; cost of raising loan, £25; first year’s inftercst, £IBO. It will bo understood that tho two sots of figures represent the difference in cost, of work if concrete and asphalt material have to be purchased as compared with cost if obtained from council’s own pit with proposed plant. Tho grand totals are: First estimate, £3241 Is 6d; amended, £2894 2s 6d. Another matter of importance was brought forward, and that was tho riding of “bikes” on footpaths and also riding samo without lights at night. Boys riding to catch tho mail train to Stratford High School were stated to bo particularly given to tho former practice. Other cases were also mentioned, and finally it was decided to instruct Mr. Scally to take the names of everybody whom ho caught riding on footpaths, without respect of persons, and that the persons whose names wero thus taken should be proceeded against by tho council. A word to tho wiso (cyclist) should bo sufficient. . The question was raised ns to the advisability of allowing questions on borough business generally, at to-night’s meeting, but it is not intended to hold an all-night sitting. The business will .therefore bo confined strictly to what the mooting is called for, viz., the raising of a loan of £3OOO for street improvements. At_ tho samo time the council have no wish to hide anything from tho ratepayers, and his Worship tho Mayor will no doubt bo very willing to give-any ratepayer any information he or she may desire at any time.
