THE “STAMPEDE” AT WINNIPEG.

PAGEANT OF PIONEER LIFE. During the week of August 9 to 16 there will bo held at Winnipeg tho annual “stampede.” This international event is not only a unique affair, but is the only 'frontier celebration of its kind in tho world. Tho idea of tho “Stampede’ was first suggested by a young man, Guy Weaclick, a cattleman and roper of high reputation, well known oven the range world. Associated with Mr. Woadick in the financial backing of tho “Stampede” arc three of tho famous cattle barons of Western Canada. . This spectacle will illustrate life in tho pioneer days and tho development widen has taken place during the last sixty years. Every phase will bo presented, from the early Indians and trappers and early missionaries do'vn to the present time. There will bp scores of traders who came to V» extern Canada as far back as the sixties; trappers and hunters who have ranged the mils and plains since 1865; GOOD Indians in the trappings of half a century ago; hunters, prospectors, surveyors, cattlemen, and cowboys gay in colour, chaps, ropes, handkerchiefs, guns, and wide hats. Men who are known all over tho cattle country of the American continent will bo "there. The leading cattlemen from Texas and old Mexico, from Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Argentina, and Hawaii, as well iis those from the Western Canadian provinces, will take part in the celebration. “Tho Stampede” has been recognised as a more than national institution in Canada and the city of Winnipeg is the patron of tho enternriso of presenting this panorama of the all but extinct frontier days of the “last west. Tho “Stampede” was first produced in Calgary, Alberta, last year under the patronage of tho Duke of Connaught, Gov-ernor-General of Canada. It was officially opened by tho Duke, and ho, with the Duchess and Princess Patricia, attended- every performance. The Dominion Government allowed tho Indians to participate, and 1000 Sorcees, Stoneys, Black Feet* Cross, I eigans, and Bloods were there in tho ga y trappings of the early ’7o’s. . The “Stampede” at Winnipeg this year will also be under the auspices of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, if present plans carry. It will bo made a sort of national holiday in Canada to celebrate in a typical way tho progress of the “last great west.” Already invitations have been accepted bv men prominent in pioneer work in all parts of the American continent.y On the first day there will be a pageant representing tho progress of wio land from the coming of the white settlers in the early part of the last century down to the present day. Twenty thousand dollars will bo paid in prizes to cattlemen. Last year at Calgary the contestants-came from all parts of the world, and included broncho busters, champion riders, cattle rollers, and other men skilled in the lassoo and tho lariat.
