TARANAKI’S EARLY HISTORY. (From Taranaki Herald. 1863.) Thursday, July 2.—From Oaknra we hear that .yesterday l.iout.-Colon c. Logan had a skirmish with the rebels, who came down to Hanranga and danced the war dance. Colonel Logan fired two shells from a howitzer, which fell into tho midst of them, and witn a party from the redoubt drove thorn inland. On tho return of the troops they were fired at by some Natives at Wairau, who were also driven up towards Kaitake. Soon after the evacuation of Tatnraimaka the rebels came down and fired several volleys over tho grave of those of our people who wore killed on the 4th ult., and yesterday in bravado danced tho war dance, no doubt emboldened by the supposed giving up of the Tataraimaka Block to them. i ,The Claud Hamilton, from Auckland, arrived this morning and left this evening witli Captain Mercer’s Mounted Corps of Royal Artillery and the women and children of the detachment of the 63Ui Regiment. Wc are informed that tho captain of the Claud Hamilton expected to be detainer! here three days, but was agroeeably surprised to find that the cargo boats could load and ship 50 tons of cargo, and put mi hoard ids vessel 150 passengers and 90 horses before 6 p.m. of the sa'me day of his arrival.
