SHOP-LIFTER PINED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 1. A young married, woman was soon leaving a local draper’s shop yesterday with a number of stolen articles.ot drapery in her possession, sonic ot which she pilfered from another shop. She was arrested and brought before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-dav. who inflicted a fine of 40s or seven days’ imprisonment on one charge and ordered her to come up for sentence when called on for the second Charge. It was stated that, accused has throe young children, and had been in indigent circumstances for some time. When arrested she was slightly under the influence of liquor. WANGANUI RIVER STEAMERS. WELLINGTON, June 30, Mr. Hatrick, proprietor of the Wanganui River steamers, has written to tho chairman of the commission, which inquired recently info tho working ol the service, complaining ol the relorcn ces to drinking aboard the steamers which were included in the commission's report. Mr. Hatrick states that the drinking arises from the fact that liquor is taken aboard chiefly by Natives and bush men. Ho denies that the steam packet licenses are abused. INVERCARGILL BAND CONTEST. INVERCARGILL, June 30. A meeting of the Baud Contest Committee was held to-night. Ft was decided to nptif.v tho executive ot the South Island Bands’ Association that the committee would .withdraw Iroin further negotiations with, the Association. ' The meeting also decided to. circularise competing bands, asking them if they would give assurance of their support if the contest were gone on with, under Mr. Percy Jones (Geelong) as adjudicator.
