GOLF.

(,By “All-Square.”) New Plymouth Club fixtures for next week are: Tuesday (Indies), first round Weston Cun; Saturday, Sf. Andrew’s Cross.

Tlio New Plymouth Golf Club is to be congratulated upon the satisfactory increase in its membership this season. Tho figures now show a list of over ‘2OO members. Tho club’s progressive policy has certainly been appreciated by members, and tho course is a credit to tho town. Tho Tarahua and Witiora Clubs aro also adding to their membership, and have lately secured several enthusiastic learners, some of them recruits from the bowling clubs. Tho caretaker at Waiwakaiho is now busy planting tho sand on the sea frontage to the course with flax and marram grass. The marram grass makes splendid progress against the sand, and in a couple of years tho club should have some twenty acres of good cattle-graz-ing jhe remaining semi-final in tho Auckland Club championship, between F. V. Kelly and V/. B. Colbeck, was played on Saturday last, Oibock defeating Kelly by 6 up and 5. The fievd between Colbock and J. C. Bums will bo played on Wednesday, July 2._ Many golfers considered that W. C. Sturrock did not have more than an outside chance against E. Ij. Apperly before tho final of the Now South Wales State amateur championship was play-' ed last Saturday, this being because the .former is comparatively unknown as a golfer, while Apporly’s name and many good performances aro known throughout the State. They were, however, very much mistaken (says the Sydney 'Morning Herald), as Sturrock showed himself to bo a golfer of no mean ability. Throughout the day ho proved himself a model of steadiness, and early establishing a long lead on Apperly, the latter was unable at any tirae to get oven. Sturrock made a very fine first appearance in classical golf, and his performances in tho future will be watched with much interest, especially in tho Australian championship in August, in which it is hoped ho will bo abb to compete. In the meantime tho Fobroydo Club, of which tho champion ic a member, aro justifiably jubilant. It is early to class Sturrock as the best golfer in Now South Wales, but on Saturday’s play ho was tho better player of tho two competitors, and quite deserved his win, on which all true golfers will congratulate him. Tho State championship meeting of the New South Wales Ladies’ Golf Unions was hold in Sydney last week. Tho final of the championship was won by Miss Bay Boys, who defeated Miss Buret (last "year's champion) by 1 up after being in an apparently hopeless position, her opponent being dor my 4. A cablegram to the Sydney Sun last Tuesday from London said;—"The English professionals boat their Scottish brethren at the Hoylake links today by 9 games to 3, although Duncan defeated Vardon by 5 .and 4. The Englishmen also won tho foursomes, but Herd and Buncan beat Vardon and 3ay by 2 and 1.” Hero is a tale of Mr. Edward Blackwell, the noted long driver. Soon after he went to reside in tho Midlands ho participated in a foursome with a local golfer of average ability as his partner. Going to the first hole, Mr. Blackwell was about to address tho ball with an iron for the second shot, when his friend throw up his hands in horror. “For goodness sake, take your brassie,” ho said imploringly. "All our best players use a brassie to reach this green.” Air. Blackwell smiled and did as ho was bidden. He hit one of his longest. Tho sequel, told by the Tatler, was that tho partner had to take his brassie in order to get back to the green.
