WHANGAMOMINA AND KOHURATAHI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) June 24.—Yesterday afternoon the town presented a happy appearance, when tbo railway* engine blew a-rather jubilant whistle right on top of the new No. 7 Bridge (the largest on this line) right into the gates of tho new station yard. Air. R. Hill, in charge of the. work, was right up to. time when he promised to christen the bridge on Alonday. I may here repeat that No. 7 bridge has nine iron girders, one 81 feet and eight others 20 feet each, supported by eight concrete pillars, with strong overhead frame-work. The builders of the same are now being transferred to carry on the completion of tho eight, other bridges between AVhanga and Kohurabahi. The election of seven School .Committee members for AA’hangamomona returned Alessrs. Fawkener, AA’ildermoth, Bradley, Luudou, Barlow, Hatton and R. Hill. There were 13 nominees. Air. T. Bradley was elected chairman. Air. J. Pirani, of AA’hanga Road, is confined to bed through a somewhat serious illness. Dr. Gilding was summoned to visit the patient yesterday, and there are earnest hopes for his speedy recovery. ’ Mr* F. London, contractor for the Government building on the AVhanga station yard, will bo going ahead with a largo staff immediately on arrival of materials. The Rifle Club ball at Tabora was a great success. Some of the prominent personages in AVhanga social life went to see the battleship at Now Plymouth, but no one knows how far they got. On their way homo they were very anxious to know the colour of the’battleship for fear of being cross-examined. This at any rate is tbo story. Air. G. T. Alnrray, District Engineer, visited tho works here. Air. AV. Rothery is visiting his’ brother, of the AA’hauga Hotel. Just at the present there- is a great controversy whether cows should or should not graze oil the ground of the cemetery. It is a wonder to me somebody does not expect to graze his pigs on the same spot, because the audacity of some people is beyond description. Air. George Thomas has disposed of his farm at Kohnratahi to Air. Charles Stapleton. The latter will take possession early in August. Air. Graham, ot f Pohoknra, returned from a trip to Dunedin. Air. P. AA’. Court is away in AA’ellington on a deputation concerning AA’hanga, and expected-to return home with real good nows. The Alassey Government has for tho second time refused to lend £IOOO for drainage for AA’hauga. It will ho remembered that when Mr. Alassey was last in Stratford he was .waited on by ‘local residents ou the same subject, and when tho deputation returned home they reported Air. Alassey had promised the ■ grant. They claimed that if they did nothing at all they had got the £IOOO for AA’hanga, but developments of late hare put a different aspect on the state of affairs. I suppose tho scarcity of money has caused tho present dilemma. -
