The Government Observatory reports that an extremely severe earthquake lias beau recorded, commencing at 12.59 in the afternoon on Thursday, and the second phase at 1.4. The principal surface waves occurred at 1.16. Those were of enormous amplitude, reaching their greatest intensity very rapidly. The amplitude ef the largest was 23j millimetres, considerably m excess of any other tremor over recorded here.' The after tremors continued until 3.7, and wore of a saw-tooth pattern. The origin was about 2500 miles from Sydney, probably in the same neighbourhood as the earthquake recorded on May 13. MELBOURNE, June 27. The Government Astronomer states that the earthquake recorded is one of the most striking ever taken here. It occurred probably to the north-east of Australia, in the Pacific. FATHER PIGOT’S CALCULATION. (Received Juno 28, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY. June 28. Father Pigot, of River View Observatory, places the epicentre of the earthquake near the northern end of the Tonga-Kermadec trough, which runs through the north and north-east of New Zealand, and forms a line of grout weakness in the bod of the Pacific.
