BUTTER AND CHEESE.

Mr. Ncwton King’s weekly butter and cheese repott from Messrs. 11. and W. Davidson, Ltd., of London and Glasgow, under date Hay 18, is as follows: Notwithstanding tho Whitsuntide holidays, the demand for Continental butters has been distinctly better, and it would appear that tho lowest point for the time being has now beon touched for this grade. Our telegraphic advices from Copenhagen yesterday indicate an .improving market. Importers on this side have had to pay an advance of 2s to 3s on their basis price for their next week’s arrivals. During the past few weeks tiro weather has been very cold, but wo have had an abundance of rain, and if dry, warm conditions would' come along the home production would increase very rapidly. The German markets are reported to be again slightly easier. COLONIAL BUTTERS. Australian.—There has been one small arrival this week—viz., the s.s. Osterley, with 2900 boxes. Strictly choicest salt and saltless quality is inquired for. but is in very small supply. Nominal prices;—Salted. 110 s, unsalted 112 s to 114 s. Secondary butters are still plentiful, and we regret we cannot report any improvement in tho demand. Today’s values—92s up to 100 s for both salted and unsalted. From Australia largo shipments are advised as being on the way. New Zealand.—The butter landed last week ex s.s. Arawa is now entirely cleared, and there is practically nothing offering on tho market at present. Nominally, quotations remain . unchanged—ll2s to- 1 114 s for choicest quality. The s.s. Turakina, which was on firo off Rio do Janeiro, and had to ho beached there, wasjduo in London yesterday with a quantity of cheese and butter on board, all more or less damaged. It will be some days, however, before these goods can bo landed, and until then nothing will be known about tho actual condition of the produce on board. Imports to the United Kingdom up to May 10 in cwts.: —l9lo, 1,625,198; 1911, 1,802,549; 1912, 1,571,208; 1913, 1,543,895. CHEESE. Now Zealand.—There is a steady demand tor white, which is by no means plentiful. Stocks of coloured are excessive, and pressed for sale. We quote choicest white 58s to 58s Gd, with choicest coloured at 56s to 56s 6d. Canadian.—The demand continues to be most disappointing, buyers only idling actual requirements. Choicest white and coloured 59s up to 625. Prices for best fodders are 54s to 55s c.i.f. Imports to the United Kingdom up to May 10 in cwts.:—l9lo, 627,461; 1911, 582,197; 1912, 567,172; 1913, 638,088.
