CHIEF OFFICER 0 ASSAULTED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 3. The Ruapehu, which loft London on March 13, arrived at Wellington today. Sho met tho full force of Thursday night’s gale, hut came through without damage. During tho height of tho storm sho was only able to steam two and a half knots an hour. Captain Clifford ran the vessel into Cloudy Bay, but owing to a sudden change in the wind, found ho could not anchor there, and put out into tho Straits again. During the voyage Mr. Tongo, tho chief officer, had his noso nearly bitten off by a passenger, who was sentenced at Hobart to two months imprisonment for assault, and a like term for damage to property.
