OAKURA.
(From Gun,Own Correspondent.) May I.—At tho meeting of householders held in tho schoolroom on Monday night only just the number to form the committee 1 were -present, which goes to show the .amount ,of in-; terest parents tike 1 in the education of their children. They: will not turn out once a- year to hear things concerning the working of.tho committee, or to take part in carrying but their duties, but leave it to, single men or men without families,! and '.then grumble if tilings . done by the committee do not please them) Mr. Q. Adlanf 'was voted to the chair; and'the annual report'and balance-sheet were read and: passed. It was proposed and seconded'that all in the room ..be elected topthe committee for the ensuing year. ’This was carried, and‘ Messrs.. J. Hqaly, H. Gordon,. P. H. Mace, W. K. Morris, F.' C. Mace,M’Gowcra and G. A. Adlam were elected. , Mr. AY, K. Morris was reelected chairman of the committee and' Mr. F. C. Mace to sign cheques with the chairman. Our ncwl.v-electod Hall Committee is ou, the move, and is getting up a dance to be held on Thursday night, ! the 20th‘ inst., -wheir they hope -lor - fine .weather, and a full house. The.'secretary is very energetic. The hall will bo decorated for the occasion;-■ I hear they are .trying to; raise funds to get the hall painted, ns it is beginning to look somewhat shabby. The cause is a goad one and I wish, them luck. ; By the way the latest idea ! is that we are thinking it would bo a good plan to fortify a place on tho Kaitake ranges with guns carrying 10 miles to protect 1 New Plymouth from the, Germans when ■ they come.
