AUSTRALIAN MINES.

A CONFERENCE ASKED FOR.

By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received May 3, 9.25 a.m.) SYDNEY. May 3. A meeting of the northern coalowners considered the request of the Emplpyces J Federation for a conference to deal with existing grievances. Though official information is withheld it is understod that the employers decided to hold to their decision not to grant a conference while any of the pits remained idle. Two mines, the Borehom and Lambton B, are now working. In reference, to the recent deputation of southern and northern coal miners and waterside workers to Ministers, and the statements published in the press that threats were made to precipitate a big strike, Mr. Carmichael has published an official statement in refutation of this allegation, showing that the representatives of each union declared against a strike, and urged that the Government should take steps to bring the contending parties together to secure a settlement. No threats were made.
