THE MANAROA.

SALVAGE TO BE ATTEMPTED. It has been* decided by the underwriters' to make an attempt to raise the -sunken steamer Manaroa at D’-' Orville Island. On Wednesday the steamer Awaroa took an instalment of. salvage gear to land at the scene of operations. Mr. Archibald Walker, surveyor to Lloyds’ Register, has undertaken to superintend salvaging operations for all parties concerned. There is an insurance of £2OOO on the vessel’s hull for total loss only. There is a rise and fall of tide of from 12 to 16 feet, and it is intended to lift the vessel by placing a scow or. big ,puut on each side of the sunken steamer. Three booms about 55 feet in length will be laid across from one scow to the other. Powerful gear will be passed underneath the Manaroa and fastened to the booms, so that when the tide rises the vessel will be lifted so that she can be carried inshore. A diver and a carpenter are proceeding from Wellington to tho scene. Labour will be secured on D’Urville Island.
