RULE OF THE ROAD.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Now that public attention has been drawn to street in, New Plymouth as a result of my recent accident in Devon Street, I feel that it is incumbent upon me to make a plea, for the observance of-the “Rule ,of the Road.” Although the accident was the result of a combination of circumstances, the primary cause was that the driver of one of the several vehicles at that time and place _ chose to ignore the above rule. ft is one of the ironies of horouglr administration that while all . may ignore the rale of the road, yet, should a man be driving homeward within five minutes after sundown without a light ho is regarded as having committed the unpardonable sin. I contend, Sir, that he who persistently drives on his wrong side is a great danger to the community. Many drivers in New Plymouth do their very best to keep to their correct side —all honour to them—but there are others — :I hesitate to call them drivers—who al■:low their horses to wander along the streets like a ship on the sea without a rudder; such men should he made to feel that their carelessness is a menace to public safety. It is often .ludicrous to see a motor-car trying to pass a single vehicle on the road. Time and again the horn will be sounded before there is sufficient room to pass on the correct side, and yet our streets are sufficiently wide to carry twenty times the traffic without difficulty or danger. I trust, Sir, that-those who use our public thoroughfares will, for the common weal, endeavour to keep to their proper side of. the street.—l am, etc.,, H. T. PEAT. “The Parsonage,” Fitzfoy.
