GIRL GOING TO SALT LAKE CITY. A VICTORIAN CASE. MELBOyRXE, April 22. Recently a communication was received by the Commissioner of Police, Sir. Saimibury, to the effect that a young woman with whom the writer niis acquainted proposed to leave Melbourne on April iiO. in company with two girls, to join tho Mormon community in Salt Lake City: and, in the opinion of Sir. Salisbury's correspondent, tho young women should bo prevented from joining “those wretched people, the Mormons.’.’ Detective Mulfnhcy interviewed .the girl. Sho told him that she was 21 years of age, and therefore able to form an opinion for herself. Five years ago sho embraced .the Mormon faith, and had attended services conducted by Mormons ever since. An elder had visited Melbourne as n misGoncr, and she became engaged to him. When he left her he statecl that he would send for, her to join him when sho became of age. and would make her his wife. Sho had been in communication with him ever since, and ho had now arranged that she should go to.. America to marry him. He was sending her tho money for her passage, and she proposed* to leave Melbourne on April 30 to join tho American steamer at Sydney. She would,have as companions on the voyage a Melbourne Mormon elder and his wife, who were returning to Salt Lake City. Tho facts have been placed before, tho Chief Secretary, and will receive consideration. 1
