Mr. K. C. Webster leaves on Monday on a visit to America. A cablegram received to-day states that',tho Drohess of Connaught passed a fair night, but the doctors state they will bo anxious for the next few days. Mr. Felix M‘Quire, formerly M.P. for Egmont, was yesterday presented with an illuminated address from tho citizens of Hawera and settlers'- in recognition of his public services. He ■ is about to settle in Auckland—Press Association.

It is officially stated, says a London cablegram, that considering the gravity of the operation on the Duchess of Connaught her condition is satisfactory. Her temperature is normal. The King visited the Duke to inquire after her health.

At a parade of "C” Company of the 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) of Territorials at Patea on Tuesday night Captain R. W. Hamerton, who has retired after- twenty-three years’ service, was the recipient of a presentation- from the officers and men of the company.

Admiral Sir Charles Hotham, the senior admiral of the fleet, has retired at the age of 70 years. Admiral Hotham was in New Zealand during the Maori war, and was wounded in one of the assaults on the redoubt at Eangirirh He was for Ins services, and received' the New Zealand medal. He was flag captain on the Alexandra at the bombardment of Alexandria,- and held several posts as Oonjmander-in-Chief. Mr. S. P. Evans was entertained at Christchurch on Saturday to celebrate his promotion from workshops manager, Addington, to : the responsible position .of locomotive . engineer in Wellington. Mr. Evans was presented by’the staff at Addington with a solid silver tea service, a bridge box, a smokers’ outfit, also a handsome for Mrs. Evans. A large number or fuembers of the various branches of tho. j Railway Service were present. Euloj gistio reference was made to the universal popularity of Mr. Evans, and to the good work that had been done at Addington during the past five years under his direction. Mr. Evans is a brother of the Yen. Archdeacon Evans, of New Plymouth. - - '
