THE OHURA RAILWAY.

In its report of the Prime Minister’s visit to Ohura and his reply to questions, about the Stratford-Main Trunk railway, the To Kuiti paper gives a different version from that of .the New Zealand Herald’s reporter. It says-; “Mr. Massey thanked those present for the reception accorded him. Referring to the railway, he said £90,000 was appropriated last session, and £97,000 was spent. As far as the construction was concerned it was intended to complete it as soon as possible. As the southern end approached completion to the gorge the work at that end would be slackened, and the men would be placed on the Ohura end. They could look for a vigorous programme as it was recognised that the line was of foremost importance.” This, of course, is quite »■ different thing from slackening work' now, and we are glad to believe that this is what Mr. Massey actually said. The actual route from this end of the Tangarakau Gorge to Tatu has not, we believe, been definitely fixed, and until it is settled it is unnecessary to labour the question of its construction. There is ample work'before the gorge is peached to occupy two years at least of vigorous construction, and if the Government proceeds with that as fast as is practicable no fault can be found. When the line reaches the, gorge it will begin to tap the Ohura trade and the Ohura settlers will bo as eager as we are to have the connection made.
