ASSESSMENT COURT.

BOROUGH VALUATIONS. After, wo went to press on Tuesday the following objectors to the borough valuations wore, heard, and their objections adjudicated on by Mr. A. Crooke, S.M.. sitting as assessor:— George Barr: Property situated at Woolcombe Terrace; area {-acre, with three cottages. Proposed valuation £77. .Mr. Barr said be had bought the property eight years ago for £833, and had since spent £230 on it. Reduced by consent to £SO. F. C. J.‘ Bellringer: Property situated in. Devon Street. Proposed valuation £49. Mr. Bellringer computed tho value, of tho property at £BOO. The proximity of the fire.b'ell depreciated the value of the property. . Mr. Mills offered to compromise at £42, lint Mr. Bellringer would not agree to this. Reduced to £4l. James David Sole: Mr. A. H. Johnstone for the objector. Property situated at Fitzroy. Proposed valuation £50., Mr. Solo gave evidence that the section described as part 19 in the assessment paper was worth £IOO. He had bought it nine years ago for £6O. There wero no buildings on it. Mr. Mills said that he had valued all three sections owned by Mr. Sole together, and contended that tho house and buildings wero on part 19. Mr. Johnstone stated that the land in that district had originally been all known as part 19, but-had since been divided up into sections. It was clear that in this case a Clerical error had been made. His "Worship'said it was quite clear from tho evidence that a mistake had been made, and that the valuation for this section shonfd have been £7 instead of £SO, and that the valuation of £43 should have been put on the other two sections on which Mr. Sole’s house was built. Mr. Mills’'best policy; concluded his "Worship, was to effect an arrangement with Mr. Sole. Mr. Mills 1 still contended that his view of the case was the.right one, and that all the sections owned by Mr. Sole wore on part 19, and refused to compromise at £36, which Mr, Sole offered to do. : . ; Reduced to £7. '. David Sole, father of the last objector: Mr. A. 11. Johnstone for objector. Property situated at Westown. Proposed valuation 1 £lB. ■■■ Mr. J. D. Sole gave evidence .that the last borough valuation on this property was £9. The';.house-was 50 years old, and ;no improvements had- been made upon , the property for years. The house was let'for 6s per-week,' and his father had the use-of the' garden. Sir. Cork ill valued the property at £l5O.- ■■■-:; Reduced to £l4'.
